Things to do

Our top picks if you have some time to explore. For walkable essentials, scroll below and find your neighborhood.

Morning activity: Stroll Penn Avenue in the Strip District, starting at St. Stanislaus and ending at Helltown Brewing. "The Strip" is the old warehouse district that is authentic Pittsburgh. Be sure to hit Pennsylvania Macaroni and Enrico Biscotti. Colangelo’s for a coffee or pastry, and the best Italian sausage sandwich in the city. Cultural outing: Visit Phipps Conservatory or the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (or both! they’re adjacent). Book tickets ahead of time online. Walkable from The Oaklander. Artsy evening: Visit the Andy Warhol Museum then go to dinner at 40 North at Alphabet City, which has the City of Asylum Bookstore attached. Classic photo and cocktail: Go to the "Point of View" Overlook to see the city from above, then grab a cocktail at The Summit.

Oakland

Food and coffee: Pamela’s Diner (famous diner), Sciulli's Pizza, Butterjoint (lunch or dinner) What else: Oakland is home to Pitt. Less neighborhood-y and more city. Walking distance to Phipps Conservatory (get tickets online first) and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Also Soldiers & Sailors. Nearest green space is Schenley Park. All walking distance from The Oaklander hotel.

Shadyside & Friendship

Coffee: Coffee Tree Roasters Food: Georgie’s Corner Café (breakfast), Girasole (rowdy Italian dinner), Duo's Taqueria, Mercurios (Neapolitan pizza), Noodlehead (cheap Thai), Prantl’s Bakery (famous toasted almond torte) What else: Walnut Street is the main drag and has cute stores like Kards Unlimited and the Shadyside Variety Store. Mario’s Taproom is a staple

Lawrenceville

Coffee: Espresso a Mano Food: Pusadee’s Garden (dinner, reservation required in advance), LeVia Trattoria (ditto), Condado Tacos (quick, cheap tacos), Long Story Short (brewery food), Nanban (Asian soul food, BYOB) What else: Butler Street is the main drag – between the GetGo and the cemetery along Butler you’ll find eclectic shops. Cork Harbour Pub is a classic hole in the wall

Bloomfield

Coffee: Trace Brewing (they have coffee), Constellation Coffee Food: Caffe Mona (breakfast), Apteka (pierogies), Trace Brewing. For dinner we recommend Spork (American), Soju (Korean) or going one town over to Lawrenceville, see above. What else: Liberty Ave is the main drag – check out White Whale bookstore.

Aspinwall

Coffee: Aspinwall Beans’n’cream Food: Aspinwall Beans’n’cream (breakfast sandwiches), Labriola's (Italian grocer), Feast on Brilliant (quick lunch / grab-and-go grocer), Cornerstone (dinner), Luke & Mike's Front Porch (dinner) What else: Residential neighborhood that is pleasant to walk through. This is where Laura grew up and went to grade school, and where the Ceremony and Welcome Party will be
