How We Met

It all started on the passport line...

Even though we went to the same college, it took going halfway across the world to finally meet. We both went to Philadelphia University for Architecture/Interior Design and during the pre-departure study abroad meeting we were given a list of everyone going to the same school as us. Scott was actually sitting behind me during that meeting, but we never introduced ourselves. Before we went abroad, I friended him on Facebook and told him we should be friends when we got to Copenhagen! Then, when our planes arrived at the Copenhagen airport, we, along with hundreds of other eager DIS students were waiting on a long passport line. I (Laura) landed first, but Scott’s plane came in shortly after and he came up to me on the passport line and asked me if we had to wait on the line! I told him if he wanted to get his passport stamped he needed to! Once we got through customs and out of the airport, everyone was getting picked up by bus and brought to their respective dorm buildings. I distinctly remember standing out in the rain at a bus stop waiting for mine when I saw Scott on his. He yelled out the window at me and waved and asked where I lived and that we should meet up. Since I didn’t get wifi til the next day, I missed the first night out but messaged him on Facebook the next day and said we should get together! So the story continues…

What Happened Next

That next day (our second night abroad) I exchanged numbers with Scott when I saw him on the street outside our school building when we picked up our textbooks. I texted him and he told me to come over and hang out with him and all the people at his Kollegium and the dive nearby. I hopped on a train with 5 other girls from PhilaU and texted Scott when we got to the station. Even though we were just a few blocks away, Scott walked to the train station to meet me so I didn’t get lost or have to walk in the dark by myself. Even though there were about 50 of us at the bar, Scott and I talked for hours and ended up realizing we have so much in common and wanted to travel to all the same places. We ended up hypothetically planning a two week trip together that night which happened just two months later. I also met one of my best friends and bridesmaids, Bridget that night at the bar. The next day was the first day of classes and I (Laura) spilled boiling water on my hand. I had second/third degree burns and when I went to the lobby to get help and directions to the nearest pharmacy or hospital, Scott was there and I burst into tears. He had only met me the night before but was so comforting and ended up spending two hours with me trying to find a pharmacy and help be get to the hospital. He offered to come with me, but I didn’t want him to miss his first class! A few days after that, I messaged him and asked if he wanted to go to Berlin for my 21st birthday that weekend! He said yes right away and 7 of us went on our first study abroad adventure. That group ended up becoming our core friend group and we are so lucky to have them in our life! It ended up being almost -15 degrees Fahrenheit that weekend in Berlin and Scott still waited for me every time I stopped to take pictures. His caring, patience, kindness, compassion, and positive energy made me attracted to him immediately! And his smile!! It wasn’t long before I knew he was the one.

Valentine’s Day 2012

At near midnight on February 14, 2012 (2.5 weeks after we met), Scott said something to me in Danish I didn't understand "jeg har et spørgsmål" which means "I have a question". He proceeded to ask me in English to be his Valentine and nervously blurted out “I got you chocolate, I don’t know if you like chocolate but I got it anyway and I know Valentine’s Day is almost over but I think everyone should have a Valentine and I was wondering if you’d be mine?” PHEW. He said it so fast! I excitedly said yes, and we spent the night walking along the Copenhagen Harbor in the freezing cold and the rain and we shared our firs kiss.

Our First Date

It was quite the adventure...

Five days after Valentine’s Day, we actually hadn’t been on a date yet. The night of Valentine’s Day we spent 5 hours talking into the wee hours in the morning out on the Harbor and Scott mentioned he loved Disney. I saw a sign for Disney on Ice and asked Scott if he’d like to go with me! Only problem: it was in a city almost 2 hours away. We ended up getting train tickets to Odense, Denmark where we saw Disney on Ice (which was performed in Danish!) visited Hans Christiaan Andersen’s grave and house, had brunch, walked through parks, and had the best time ever! When all was said and done, our date was almost 20 hours long but the time we got back to Copenhagen.

Our Study Abroad Adventure

We can't believe this was our life!

We fell in love almost immediately after that. Five days after our first date we said “I love you” for the first time, and then had 3 months together having the time of our lives traveling and making new friends from all over the world. In the 4 months abroad together and 3 months dating, we went to: Denmark ,Finland, Sweden, England, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain. We had the time of our life and our relationship felt like it was straight out of a fairytale.

The In Between

So Many Adventures!

After getting back from Copenhagen when study abroad had ended, our love only got stronger, and our travel bug bigger. In the 7 and a half years we’ve now been together, we’ve been to 16 countries, 14 states +?, have built 4 business between us, had 7 jobs, and completed 1 house reconsutruction. Every day seems to get better than the last and we make each other laugh and smile every single day.

How Scott Proposed

Straight out of a Fairytale...

On our trip to Copenhagen in December 2018- 6 Years, 9 Months, and 22 Days after asking me to be his Valentine in Danish, Scott whispered the same sentence into my ear at near midnight in Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Like a flashback to the day he first asked me out, he said something to me in Danish I didn't understand "jeg har et spørgsmål" which means "I have a question". This time, instead of asking me to be his Valentine, he asked me to marry him! It was at the end of a PERFECT day biking around Copenhagen to all our favorite places - the palace, the harbor where we had our first kiss, the Opera House, your dorm room building where we first said I love you, and a dozen other favorite Copenhagen landmarks. This time, Scott added a new favorite place to our itinerary, Tivoli Gardens. He proposed in the entrance which was the most magical experience in the world!! I CANNOT WAIT to say I GET TO MARRY MY BEST FRIEND!!!!!

Our Wedding Day!

We are SO SO SO SO unbelievably excited to have all our friends and family in one place celebrating our love! We cannot wait to say I do on the hilltop overlooking the Hudson Valley at Red Maple Vineyard and we cannot wait to celebrate with each and every one of you!!
