A New Wedding Date

We chose Charleston, South Carolina, as our wedding destination because we wanted a place where everyone could spend a few days away from home in a warm, fun place, enjoying time with many close friends and family. Unfortunately, the two main aspects of our plan--travel and large gatherings--pose health risks that we would not ask our guests to take. Aside from health risks, restrictions on social activity, such as limits on the capacity of restaurants and bars, make our plans logistically difficult at best, and at worst will eliminate the purpose of going to Charleston in the first place. Socially distant is the very opposite of what we intended our wedding to be. We have decided to postpone our wedding until May 6, 2021, when we hope that we will be able to enjoy the company and experiences we envisioned for this fall. We thank all of our guests for understanding, and we look forward to seeing you in May!

Laura & David's Story

November 5, 2016

The 14th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers were off to a slow start against the Kansas Jayhawks. But late in the first half, the Mountaineers rattled off three touchdowns and got the ball back again with time for one more series before halftime. With 42 seconds left in the half, wide receiver Shelton Gibson leapt over a Kansas defender, caught an over-the-shoulder throw, and kept his right foot in bounds for the score. It put the Mountaineers ahead 31-0. In the West Suites of Milan Puskar Stadium, Mountaineer fans celebrated the play. Somewhere amid that celebration, Laura and David were having their first conversation. Laura had attended the game as part of a girls weekend with two other friends, one of whom had acquired her law firm's tickets to the game. Meanwhile, David’s parents had gotten tickets from a friend to a different suite and had offered David their extra ticket the morning of the game. By pure coincidence, David’s suite and Laura’s were right next to each other. Although David knew a number of other guests in Laura’s suite—and he knew the reputation the suite’s host had for making outstanding cocktails, giving him a reason to visit—neither he nor Laura knew their future spouse was right next door. They spent most of the second half chatting with each other. Not long after, Laura and David started dating. Had Laura’s friend not invited her, or had Laura decided not to go to Morgantown that weekend, or if David’s parents not run into a friend that offered them tickets to a suite the night before, it is entirely possible that Laura and David never would have met. But, that confluence of circumstances not only led to Laura and David finding each other, it led to this very wedding. More than that, it led to a lifetime of happiness for Laura and David, something neither of them expected to find at an early-November football game against a last-place team.
