It was the golden age of online dating. Laura was in graduate school at UT Southwestern and Pedro was working at Baylor. They were both playing the game that is online dating and happened to be on Tinder, a dating app, at the same time. Laura remembers thinking hard about her decision to match, or "swipe right," on Pedro's pictures. He seemed brooding and his pictures were mostly artistic or personality pieces-none of them really showed his face well lit and from the front. After some consideration, she finally decided to swipe right because what was the worst thing that could come from matching? Pedro went into online dating with a check list of what he wanted in a partner. She needed to be 5' 7", ethnic, a college graduate, have a 5 year plan, no tattoos, ***
The "first date" depends on how you define a date. Laura and Pedro both went rock climbing at the same gym but had never met there. Pedro asked Laura to go rock climbing but when the day came, she texted him to inform him that she was going with a couple of friends. This is not what he had envisioned. After clarifying that he was interested in a romantic relationship, not a platonic one, Pedro asked Laura to go on an official date to Cosmo's, a bar and lounge. She agreed and this lead to a long conversation which revealed how similar they were. Their favorite food was sushi, favorite restaurant was Fujiyama, and they both loved competitive video games. After 4 hours of talking, Laura decided to call it a night and go home. Pedro was sure that this was a bad sign as his previous dates were 8 hours at the minimum. However, as soon as she got home, Laura added him online and they continued to talk. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship, with ups and downs, cats and kittens, inside jokes, and never ending laughter.
We both knew from very early on that we enjoyed each other's company and naturally wanted to spend time with each other. This quickly resulted in Laura moving in with Pedro, numerous trips to different cities and countries, and now this marriage business. We are currently in Dallas but are planning to relocate depending on where Laura ends up matching for her residency program next year. We are excited to see where our journey leads and thank you for being a part of our lives! We hope that you will continue to be in the years to come.
