Funny enough, we had known several members of each other's family but never knew each other. As fate would have it, in Easter 2001, Alric was off from work and decided to catch up on communication with a few pen pals at a friend's computer store. Latoya was recovering from the tragic loss of her uncle and was also off from school. She had a Spanish project to complete and decided to go to an internet cafe to conduct research. They were both in the same computer store (Compucabana) but never interacted until Latoya's older sister arrived and shared that she knew Alric and went down the family tree. Strangely, we could relate to knowing members of each other's family very well, but there was no cognitive connection to knowing each other. Latoya's interest peaked when her sister, Tamara, advised that Alric spoke Spanish and would be a good resource to assist with her project. Alric agreed to assist, and the rest was history. Latoya's project scored her an A, and the tutoring continued. She became fluent in Spanish and soon became the top scholar. She completed secondary-level Spanish and progressed to the advanced level because of Alric's support. The attraction on both sides was not instant but grew over time. Alric describes Latoya as having an irresistible spark like none other. She was fierce, determined, vivacious, ambitious and full of life. Not to mention pretty as a picture and would dance at the drop of any music. "Not like your everyday Glendevon Girl," was what drove him to pursue a relationship with her. Latoya describes Alric as selfless, disciplined, and driven with a passion to see others succeed. He could relate to her struggles and listened intently when she spoke. He was relentless and was not scared off by the adversity of her circumstances. He saw her beyond stigma and stereotype. Latoya shared that she was not interested in a boyfriend but made the exception for Alric due to him being genuinely relentless. After 2 1/2 years of dating and eventually living together, Alric proposed to Latoya in January 2004 in the presence of his brother, Aldean, and his now-deceased aunt, Maurice. Despite the semi-private proposal, they both eloped and got married on January 29th, 2004. The rest has been history-making, with no regrets. They have built and changed careers together, bought homes, raised and nurtured 2 beautiful children, among many other moments and accomplishments shared. 21 years ago, Alric and Latoya embarked on the grand adventure of marriage - quietly, intimately, without all the fanfare. Now, we're ready to celebrate this incredible journey with all of you!
