In October, Albany shines with crisp fall air and vibrant foliage along the Hudson River, creating the perfect cozy autumn backdrop. Stroll through Washington Park, explore the stunning New York State Capitol, and visit the New York State Museum. For peak foliage, we highly recommend Thacher State Park, where dramatic cliff views overlook the Hudson-Mohawk Valley. For a classic fall outing, head to Indian Ladder Farms for apple picking, fresh cider, and some of the best cider donuts around. With scenic views, historic charm, and seasonal traditions, Albany in October offers the perfect blend of culture and classic upstate fall magic.

Lake George, a classic Adirondack getaway about 1 hour from Albany. In October, the lake and surrounding mountains are especially stunning, with vibrant fall foliage reflecting across the water. Lake George offers a perfect mix of scenic beauty, outdoor adventure, and cozy small-town charm. For sweeping views, hike (or drive up) Prospect Mountain, a moderate trail of about 2.5 miles round trip with panoramic vistas of Lake George, the Adirondacks, and the valley below. On the way, stop in Saratoga Springs, just 45 minutes from Albany, to explore its historic downtown, boutique shops, mineral springs, and vibrant dining. Be sure to check out the famous Saratoga Race Course. Enjoy a lakeside walk, scenic drives through the Adirondacks, and the brilliant autumn colors. Lake George in October offers outdoor adventure, autumn beauty, and classic Adirondack charm for a memorable getaway.

Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy—including hosting the 1980 Winter Olympics—adds to its character, while Mirror Lake reflects brilliant shades of red and gold. Autumn is ideal for scenic drives along the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway or taking in panoramic views from Whiteface Mountain. For hikers, Cascade Mountain is a favorite: about 4.8 miles round trip, moderate in difficulty, and one of the more accessible High Peaks, with sweeping summit views at peak foliage. The bride grew up spending every June in York Beach with her family—a tradition that makes it an especially meaningful place to celebrate. About 3.5 hours from Albany, York Beach is beloved for its sandy shores, classic New England charm, and the iconic Nubble Lighthouse, perched on the rocks at Cape Neddick. Local favorites include Long Sands and Short Sands beaches, The Lobster Shack, Dunne's Ice Cream, The Bagel Basket, the scenic Wiggly Bridge, and historic Fort McClary. Best ice cream place The Scoop Deck. Just south, Ogunquit is home to the scenic Marginal Way, a 1.25-mile cliff walk with sweeping ocean views, as well as a charming downtown filled with boutiques, galleries, and seafood spots. About 30 minutes north, Portsmouth offers a vibrant waterfront, historic brick buildings, Market Square, Strawbery Banke Museum, Prescott Park along the Piscataqua River.
