On a Tuesday evening in April 2023 at the Young Adults Geneva Bible study, Haley was distracted by a pair of red shoes and the outgoing man wearing them. Alec, struck by her ability to strike up a conversation with total strangers, tried to remind himself that he was there to grow in his relationship with Jesus and not necessarily to find a woman. After meeting and realizing their growing attraction toward each other, Alec and Haley found themselves trying to find ways to make contact without being too forward. Haley suggested to their whole Bible study group a day at the beach followed by a BBQ, which Alec quickly signed up for. A few weeks later, Haley offered both a meal and a custom cake at (for those who are familiar with it) the YAGs auction – Alec immediately bought them. During the following group get-togethers, Haley and Alec found every excuse to sit together and talk with each other. On one such night while giving Alec a ride back to the train station, Haley asked him if he wanted to stay in Switzerland permanently. When he replied yes, she joked, "Well then, I guess you'll need to find either a job or a wife in Switzerland!”; a joke Alec was known to make in other circles and which he had avoided making in front of Haley. Soon enough they started to speak daily and realized their shared interest in Jesus, board games, and cats. Their relationship solidified over dinner dates, tacos, time at the beach, walks with ice cream, and intentional discussions about their needs and desires in a relationship. After his plans to surprise Haley by proposing on a family trip were ruined due to sickness, Alec planned to propose to her at his birthday party after an escape room. After the game, the coordinator of the escape room said “I heard it was someone’s birthday. Find the key in this room to unlock that box,” indicating to a small lockbox on the counter, “and you can keep what’s inside.” Alec found the key, opened the box, and proposed to Haley with the ring that was inside. She said yes, opting for no escape from life together as a happily married couple. Alec and Haley have known the love and goodness of God throughout all the stages of their relationship. They are grateful for His timing, His provision, and His steadfast love, even when they do not feel deserving of it. Their relationship was interwoven with friends and family from the beginning.
