How We Met

2015

After coming to Portland in 2008, the day came when Lana found her self in need of a new roomate. She looked to her church community and made an annoucement at the mic one Sunday. The person who stepped forward was Mathias Quackenbush. Mathias, who grew up in Vancouver, Washington, had just come back North after living for some time in San Francisco where he had gone after graduating from Reed College in 2011. Mathias was attending PSU and spent much of his time volunteering and politically organizing. Lana was working three jobs while trying to launch a small business. As two busy people they found an ability to enjoy quiet time at home together and the seeds of a future were planted. It took moving apart and the passing of time before Mathias took the bold move of texting to say he thought the two would be “good together”.

The Proposal

2019

Neither Lana nor Mathias have historically placed much stock in the institution of marriage. Finding each other changed that. During a blissful holiday-season Sunday in late 2018, we both relished letting on that in spite of ourselves, this was what we wanted. From that point on, we moved quickly through the process of negotiating and purchasing an engagement ring at least approaching Lana's own brilliance and beauty. Mathias bided his time for an occasion appropriate to the magnitude of the formal ask, until the opportunity presented itself in April, on the weekend of his 30th birthday. After a friend-filled night of karaoke and dancing, they set off that Saturday for the Columbia River Gorge. Rainy weather diverted them to Beacon Rock, the world's second-largest freestanding monolith. They scaled it and, amidst the fog and rain so familiar to our Pacific Northwest climate and overlooking the gorge in all its natural grandeur, Mathias produced the ring. Thankfully, he succeeded in not accidentally tossing it over the edge.

Our Work in the World

Where we are headed

We are both very active members of the Unitarian Universalist faith, and our congregation Wy’east ( a name taken from the native Tlingit language, for the Mountain called Mt. Hood). Lana’s focus has long been on family and community. She’s fortunate to have a lead teacher position in a quality preschool downtown. She also works in support of children and familes through the church. Mathias has a passion for social and politcal activism and works delivering mental health services to adults. We are creating a home where we can work with others to contribute our gifts to communities in need. We look forward to hosting potlucks, canvasses, game nights, craft nights, sign making nights, and family gatherings. To replenish ourselves we will continue to travel out in to the hills and trails of the nature that surrounds us. One of the joys of our lives is to pick a place or direction and to head there side by side.
