Laine Mackey and Tom Edathikunnel met entering their senior year of college while studying abroad in Spain. They became fast friends as they bonded over music, movies and wine—such good friends in fact that Laine would often tell Tom, he was "like a brother." (not the ideal start to a romance) After returning to Albany their friendship, and wine consumption continued before turning into something more. And the rest is history! Just kidding. Laine and Tom have had quite an interesting journey getting here. Before they met, Laine had applied to the Peace Corps and learned she'd be nominated to go the Sub-Saharan Africa. She accepted the invitation in the spring, knowing it meant 27 months apart from Tom. After graduation, Laine left for Namibia. Thus began 27 months of weekly Sunday phone calls, hand-written letters and the occasional care package. That's right, they did long distance for 2 years! After the Peace Corps, Laine moved to New York City for graduate school. Being reunited allowed both Laine and Tom to share countless adventures, embark on new travels, laugh at hilarious jokes and create new milestones in life. On New Year's Eve 2017, Tom took Laine by surprise and asked if she'd be his wife.
