Question

What do I need to know about the high altitude?

Answer

Denver sits at 5,280 feet - one mile above sea level. Everyone's body reacts to elevation differently. Some people don't notice anything at all, while other people notice elevation changes more strongly. If you are traveling from out of town, here are some recommendations for how to make sure the altitude doesn't get you down (pun intended!) 1) Arrive early and enjoy Colorado activities. The surest way to help your body feel comfortable with altitude is to give it an extra day or two to adjust. Both Denver and the mountains are amazing places to vacation - make a trip out it! 2) Be careful with alcohol: People coming from sea level typically feel the effects of alcohol more strongly and more quickly than normal when they are at high altitudes. Stay aware of how much you're drinking. Remember, 1 drink at altitude = 2 drinks at sea level. 3) Drink a ton of water: The air in Colorado is very dry and it's very easy to get dehydrated. Drink way more water than you think you need. 4) Wear sunscreen: The sun is stronger at higher elevations and it's very easy to get burned. Put on sunscreen whenever you spend time outside. Don’t forget lip balm!
