The date almost didn’t happen. Emily nearly chickened out. Jess was 10 minutes late (unheard of for him). But then their conversation over dinner continued until they realized the restaurant had emptied around them.

After four years together, Jess planned to propose on their annual vacation to Highlands while on a hike. Instead, on the first day of vacation Emily made a proposal joke and he hit a knee in the middle of downtown on the Fourth of July while a summer storm rolled in.
