What do you call a Chinese + Indian couple? Chindian. Malay + Indian? Mamak. Malay + Chinese? Well… we didn’t quite know either. Four years ago, our story started over coffee. At that time, Wawa was running her pop-up coffee business, YAWB, at our local park, while KZ was one of their regular customers. Well, “regular” might be too kind of a word, he would usually just drive through, sit in the car, wait for his coffee to be delivered to his window, and leave. To Wawa, KZ came across as a little arrogant. So naturally, she made it her mission to one day make this arrogant customer her friend. Then one day, fate, or maybe caffeine intervened. A mutual friend happened to stop by the coffee stand while KZ was stopping by. So it was natural for KZ to get out of the car and greet this mutual friend, conversations started, and somehow after that, KZ was showing up almost every weekend. Till today, we joke that eventhough YAWB is on hiatus now, the mission wasn’t to sell coffee after all, it was for us to meet each other. Fast forward a few years later, while waiting for KZ’s haircut in KL, we were approached by a young lady raising funds for a charitable cause. At first, we politely declined, but as the conversation continued, she shared that she was a Chinese Muslim and introduced herself by her nickname: “Manis” When we asked why, she smiled and told us: “Melayu + Chinese = Manis” And somehow, it stuck. Because in many ways, that’s us too. Different backgrounds, different upbringing, different cultures, different traditions coming together to create something uniquely ours. And on 25 July, the story of Manis comes full circle as we begin our next chapter together as husband and wife.
