We met in early October 2019 in our Archaeology 101 class at Wayne State University. At the time, we were both Anthropology majors, having been in the class together since August, but we hadn’t interacted until this moment. During a mini field trip to the Anthropology Museum, located right above our classroom, Kyler sprinted up the stairs to hold the door open for Sasha. While his gesture was sweet, Sasha was totally confused—why was this guy from her class suddenly running to open the door for her when they hadn’t spoken before? As we entered the museum, our professor warned us not to touch anything, but of course, Kyler immediately began touching everything in sight. Laughing, Sasha joked, “You clearly don’t listen.” Kyler casually responded, “Oh, it’s okay—I work here.” When Sasha started quizzing him about the artifacts, it quickly became clear he had no idea what any of them were, which only made us both burst into laughter. After class, we walked to our cars and ended up sitting on the curb for nearly five hours, talking about life and our dreams. Unknowingly, we both called our closest friends that night, telling them we had just met the love of our lives.
