In the spring of 2019, Sydney and Kyle filed into the classroom for one final hurdle before summer break—microeconomics final. Sydney found a seat next to a friend. Kyle walked in next and sat on the opposite side of Sydney’s friend. Unbeknownst to them, their friend was mutual. Kyle finished the exam quickly and headed out. Sydney turned to her friend and asked, “Who was that guy?” But nothing more came of it—at least, not yet. Summer came and went, back to school for fall semester. During her early morning workouts, Sydney recognized a familiar face; the same guy that sat two seats away in the microeconomics final. Sydney decided to shoot her shot. On October 6 (Kyle’s birthday), she sent him a DM on Instagram, knowing nothing but his name. Turns out he recognized her too. Casual conversation blossomed into dating and their bond grew quickly, completely out of the blue. The rest of their time at school together was nothing short of magical. Sydney continued her degree in the business school and Kyle continued with engineering. Kyle was pulled away from Pittsburgh for semesters at a time during co-op rotations in OH, MA, and NC. It gave them their first taste of reality away from school. But they understood the sacrifice a strong relationship sometimes takes and made the most of their quality time together. Knowing their early careers could take them on different paths, they made an agreement to support each other no matter what. And it turns out, things can always get tougher… Sydney and Kyle’s first jobs sent them on separate paths. First, 200 miles apart, then 1000 miles apart, then 800 miles apart. The next three years were incredibly challenging, but forged their bond forever. Their lives and schedules changed constantly, but their commitment never wavered. Always finding the time for each other, logging thousands of FaceTime hours, and counting down the days till their next weekend visit. Long before the long-distance was over, Sydney and Kyle knew what they had was special. So Kyle thought, why wait? Hundreds of miles of space allowed for Kyle to make all the preparations without any risk of spoiling the surprise. In November 2023, after drawing up the plans over FaceTime with Sydney’s sister, Kyle brought Sydney to a staged double date where he popped the question. Fast forward a couple more career moves for the both of them, and the wait was finally over. Kyle officially moved in with Sydney in January 2025. Distance will forever be a part of their story, but it doesn’t define it. No more countdowns, no more FaceTimes, no more Friday to Sunday flight plans. The miles that once separated them had only made their hearts grow fonder, and as they stand together, one thing is clear: love conquers all.
