This story begins with Kyle's mom, Nancy. In September of 2022, Nancy was working part time at Cold Spring School in Indianapolis with Brightlane Learning, an educational non-profit that helps support students facing homelessness. Her small classroom was near Demi's classroom on the side of the building where car riders would get dropped off in the mornings. Demi and Nancy were usually across the hall from each other greeting students. One day during spirit week, it was pajama day. The two were chatting and Nancy said, "If I was wearing my actual pajamas, I'd have on my old and tattered 2016 Bernie Sanders shirt" and Demi's response was, "How much of a better world would we be living in if he'd won?" To what seemed to Demi as a non-sequitur, Nancy said, "Are you single?" The answer was yes, but the conversation got side-tracked by welcoming students. A week or so later, during another morning chat, Nancy was talking about her son and how he was traveling in Spain to see a cycling race. She showed her his picture and told her all about him. A few nights later, Demi got a call from another co-worker, Stacy, asking if she knew Nancy had a son and would she be interested in meeting him. The next day Demi and Nancy exchanged numbers. Meanwhile, Kyle had no knowledge of this. At the end of the week, Nancy casually mentioned it to him and he agreed to meet this girl she'd met at school. Ten minutes later, Nancy put Kyle and Demi in a group text, introducing them. (They now use this group text for when Nancy makes a Costco run.) They met at Monon Coffee Co. in Broad Ripple on October 16, 2022. The first thing she noticed about him was his blue eyes, and for him it was her curly hair. They drank lattes and talked for more than three hours. They swapped stories about trips to Europe, books, cycling, and of course Bernie Sanders.
