We met by random chance on Tinder. Derek was visiting DC on a whim and Kyle was spending time with friends. We both just happened to swipe right. One week later we decided to have our first date: a simple dinner and a walk around the area to get to know one another a little more. The date ended with a simple kiss at DuPont Circle, and neither of us had anticipated more to come out of it. We both knew that we were not ready to commit to someone immediately after that first date. Derek had just started going on dates again after recovering from a previous relationship. Kyle was focused on completing another year of law school to pursue a greater career. Neither of us were ready for the "committed" life. After that date, we didn't speak to one another for almost eleven months. Yes, you read that correctly. ELEVEN MONTHS! That was until Kyle decided to randomly text Derek to see how he was doing. Chime up a conversation about a show we both happened to watch, and see if further conversation could ensue. Fortunately, the conversation led to another date: a trip to the zoo... in February. Though it was freezing cold and majority of the animals were stowed away for the season, we both still had conversation as if we had never been apart for all of those months. It felt natural. As if we both just knew all of the right things to say. From that point forward Derek would visit DC every weekend to spend more time with Kyle. We would go out with Kyle's friends, stay in and watch movies, sing karaoke, and see things that DC offered that we would have never done alone. Almost two months later, we decided that things just seemed "right" and wanted to give dating a try. We did not set any expectations. We just felt happy together, and we wanted to continue to enjoy having one another in our lives. Kyle knew Derek was a big Disney fanatic, and that was when Kyle decided to ask Derek if he was comfortable with being a couple. "Do you trust me?" he said with a grin knowing that Derek would immediately notice the quote from Aladdin. Derek said yes. Ever since then we have been inseparable. We have so many hobbies and interests that we shared in common. Between collecting Funko Pop! figurines, playing Pokemon Go, and playing board games there were plenty of things to keep our relationship lively. We moved in together the summer of 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even being trapped inside together could not hinder our relationship. The love has always been there. Throughout our relationship, we had discussed where we saw ourselves in the future. We both had mentioned numerous times that marriage had always been a potential option for the right person. Neither of us was scared of the idea. Fast forward to our four year anniversary. Kyle wanted to recreate our first date. Start with dinner at the same location, take a stroll through the city, then finish with a kiss at DuPont Circle. As we have our kiss at DuPont Circle and get ready to head home there was a crowd of people slowly walking our way playing Derek's favorite Disney song, "I See the Lights" from Tangled. Derek then notices that the crowd of people are both of their closest friends and family surrounding them. Derek turns around to see Kyle down on one knee, ring in hand, and wearing that same grin from four years ago. "Will you marry me"? And here we are today. Planning an exciting wedding, and we are excited to celebrate the day with all of our friends and family!
