How We Met

First Comes School, Then Comes Marriage

Our story began in third grade as classmates, where we spent the next two years flirting and playing at recess. By the last day of fourth grade, Myles asked me to be his girlfriend. I was so thrilled that I wrote him a love letter with hearts and flowers on it, which I don't think he appreciated enough! But thankfully since neither of us had phones, after a summer of not talking, we started fifth grade a little too cool for each other, pretending like nothing had really happened. We both focused on school, sports, and spending time with family and friends through middle school. I ended up moving to Elkhorn for high school, while Myles stayed in Yutan. Every once in a while, we’d think of each other, but it wasn’t until April of our senior year, when my sister Christina posted a birthday photo of me, that Myles saw it and thought I was really cute. He added me on Snapchat, and soon we were spending the summer FaceTiming and becoming friends all over again. That summer, I worked in Okoboji, so we only hung out twice. Our first outing as friends was to go bowling and to the arcade (I won), followed by an official mini-golf date (I beat him again). We were excited to find out that we’d both be attending UNO in the fall. Right before classes began, we officially started dating. We both got involved in the college ministry Salt, joined Bible studies, and found our church home at Citylight. During this time, we realized that we hadn’t been dating wisely and couldn’t make each other our first priority, so we broke up. We weren’t very patient, and later that fall, we got back together. Even through that, we experienced God’s faithfulness and grace in our lives. Over time, He was faithful to sanctify us and teach us how to love one another in a biblical way that honors Him. Overall, we’ve had such a sweet time in college, experiencing Salt’s retreats and conferences, building community, celebrating milestones, working, and studying. Myles will graduate with a degree in finance, and I’ll have a degree in teaching! We’ve been greatly blessed by the support of our families during our college years, it has made all the difference. I’ve had the privilege of living with friends as roommates in a beautiful house, while Myles wisely stayed at home to save money. Looking back, we’re so thankful for the character of our God, that He is patient and good—even when we fail to be! As we both keep pursuing Christ, we learn that putting God at the center of our lives—and therefore our relationship—is what we truly are created for. We’ve seen so much fruit in our lives as we continually remember that it’s not about us as much as it's about Him. So, really our story is, first comes Jesus, then comes marriage! We’re excited to spend the rest of our lives together, trusting in all that God has for us!
