Our story begins when we first met through Hinge, an online dating app, while we were both attending Grand Valley State University in March of 2019. Over text messages that quickly became paragraphs long, we got to know the truly important things about each other, including but not limited to: peanut butter preferences, opinions on which Great Lake is best, and our favorite movies from childhood. ~ For our first date we went to the Grand Rapids Downtown Market. After about an hour of walking side-by-side, visiting various stops inside the market, we stopped at our next destination: Old World Olive Company, a little shop where you can sample and buy many different kinds of olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Something Keegan learned about Veronica that night is that she will strike up conversations with just about everyone... and that includes the employee of the little Old World Olive Company kiosk. After 10 minutes of excellent discussion with this employee about which balsamic vinegar best fit each of their personalities, Keegan went to sample the one that had been selected for him. With Keegan outside of earshot, the employee (after they had become fast friends) asked Veronica, "You two are so cute! How long have you been together?" Feeling validated that this date with Keegan was going as well as she thought, Veronica responded "Oh, actually it's only our first date... but I think I love him." We know you're probably thinking, "Woah, I hope she didn't tell him that on their first date" and don't worry, she didn't! She did, however, tell him that story a few months later. But this time, there was a plot twist: turned out, he was feeling the exact same thing she was that night. ~ A little over three years later, we found ourselves standing back in the Old World Olive Company kiosk inside the Grand Rapids Downtown Market sampling oils in the city we now call home together. Veronica's mind was focused on getting BOBA tea, while Keegan's mind was focused on what he knew he was going to be asking her that evening. After weeks of planning and finally working up the courage to speak, Keegan asked "Do you remember what you said to the employee here on our first date?" Then, Veronica spotted her brother John and sister-in-law, Alicia, taking pictures and holding flowers. Keegan proceeded to get down on one knee. She couldn't believe what was happening. Veronica was so overflowing with joyful emotions at the sight of him holding up a ring for her that she couldn't register every kind and thoughtful word he said. But to be honest, that same thing could be said for Keegan, too. What they both knew was happening in that moment, however, was that he was asking her to marry him. And once she realized what was happening, she knew that she couldn't possibly be any more excited to say yes!
