Looking for the best assortment of teas on the east coast? Look no further! Tea isn't your thing? Try a honey tasting! This is truly one of our favorite places around town for either refreshing cold beverages, or a sit down for hot steeps and re-steeps.
Into cars? The Automobile museum is a great spot to pair with Spa State Park because its located on park property. The current featured exhibition is Bond in Motion which contains many of the cars used in the filming of James Bond movies throughout the years. If you're an Aston Martin fan or a fan of James Bond this is a MUST DO.
Saratoga is known for its patronage of the arts. In fact the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet hold residency here for the summer. The National Museum of Dance was founded by the Vanderbilt family and is a gorgeous building in addition to its educational value for the history of dance. This is a great pair with Spa State Park because of how close they are together!
Congress Park is the most centrally located park in Saratoga Springs. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Congress Park takes design queues from Central Park in New York City which was also designed by Olmstead. Located in Congress Park is The Canfield Casino -- our reception venue, the Saratoga Merry-Go-Round, a beautiful WWII Veterans Memorial, the Trask Stairs, and many peaceful spots to sit and have a picnic.
Saratoga is well known to be the turning point of the American Revolutionary War, the point at which France decided they would lend aid in the form of guns, soldiers, and a navy. Learn another side of Benedict Arnold (yes, the traitor) who is hailed as a hero, leading the colonial army to victory over General Burgoyne and the British Army. A great spot to take a walk learn some history and take in breathtaking views!
This one is for my Hamilton fans out there. The Estate of Philip Schuyler in Saratoga Springs is the "house upstate" referenced in the song "Take a Break". This is a great spot to learn more about Peggy Schuyler, who was an afterthought in the musical but was somewhat of a badass. This is a great pair with the the Saratoga Battlefield as they are only a few minutes from each other.
I know we might be biased, but King serves some of the best ice cream we have ever had. Located in Schylerville, about 15 minutes outside of Saratoga Springs, the scenery around the creamery are as beautiful as their flavors of ice cream. Kurt's favorite flavor is Sure Ain't Vanilla, and Ashley's is Cookie Monster -- be ready for a blue mouth! Be forewarned though, this might ruin other ice cream places for you!
There are not many things about Saratoga that leave us wanting. However, the coffee scene here was fairly undeveloped. That was until Kru moved in. This coffee shop serves the best cups of coffee in the area bar none. They take a borderline scientific approach to their coffee beans that is rivaled by none around here. If you are into a good espresso drink or fancy a pour over, this specialty coffee shop is the place for you!
Uncommon Grounds has to be our favorite place to get a bagel and a decent cup of coffee in Saratoga! This cozy cafe is far from a "hidden gem" located in the center of Broadway, so be sure to budget enough time to order and sit down for a while! Be sure to ask for the bacon scallion cream cheese and a tomato on your bagel. They add a lot to the experience!
Triangle Diner boasts one of the greatest breakfast specials menus around. Don't be put off by the exterior of this local haunt. It may look like it has been shot at from the outside (because it has been long ago), but the food hugs you from the inside out. You will quickly learn that they don't need a flashy exterior to attract and keep loyal customers.
El Mexicano is the best authentic Mexican food in Saratoga! Saratoga Race Track and the Backstretch is mostly supported by migratory workers from Mexico and Central America. This restaurant was started by the Vasquez family to serve their fellow migratory workers in 2009 and have quickly become a favorite place of the locals here in Saratoga. Definitely get a pitcher of margs, they're the best in town. However, be aware, the server will offer a shot of tequila on the house after the meal, so don't overindulge!
We have always said that a good kosher deli in Saratoga Springs would make a killing, and we were right. Saratoga's Broadway Deli is one of the best kosher spots that we have eaten at outside of the NYC Metro. Ashley and any other friends we bring there have dreams about the sandwiches, knishes, and matzo ball soup made with love by "Deli Man Dan".
Pint Sized is Kurt and Ashley's favorite bar in Saratoga and its not particularly close. Pint Sized serves local craft beers, ciders, and seltzers which they take great care in sourcing the best of the best. The vibe of this bar is drinking in your best friends basement in the 90s. You want to play Nintendo 64? You can! Want to watch VHS tapes of all of your favorite 90s movies? Go for it! The short ceiling is plastered with craft beer labels, some of them likely put up there by Kurt. Also, be sure to look around at the polaroid pictures pinned to the wall to see if you can find Kurt or Ashley or both!
There is a reason we typically do these two together. Saratoga Lake, located at one end of Fitch Road is gorgeous year round. However, the real treat is on Fitch Road itself. McMahon Thoroughbreds is one of the premier horse breeders in the United States. If you want an up close and personal horse experience, look no further than this. Park on the side of the road near the horse farm and there should be a few horses in the paddocks near the side of the road. In May there should be a plethora of foals with their mothers there. Race horses change their age on January 1st no matter when they are birthed, so horse farms try to birth their foals as close to January 2nd as possible to get extra time training them before they turn 3 years old and can be run.
You're crazy if you come to Saratoga and don't do something having to do with horses. The National Horse Racing Museum and Hall of Fame is a great spot to go if you have no experience with racing or know a lot of racing history the same. Learn about Secretariat, Seabiscuit, American Pharaoh and many others through this immersive experience.
Lake George speaks for itself. This town, located about 30 minutes north of Saratoga Springs is consistently ranked in the top 10 of vacation destinations in the United States and for good reason. In the direct area, there is great hiking -- feel free to ask us which hikes are our favorites, incredible food, boutique shops, steamboat rides, SO MUCH MINI GOLF, not to mention the lake itself!
