The Haldi ceremony is a ritual holy bath also known as pithi ceremony, which is one of the pre-wedding ceremonies in India. Turmeric (Haldi), sandalwood and water are applied to both the bride and groom, a day before the wedding or the day of the ceremony. The mixture is believed to bless the couple before the wedding.

The bride and groom are next seated in front of holy fire, or Agni, as a priest recites various mantras from the Holy Scriptures. In Hinduism, fire is regarded as a purifier and a sustainer of life. In a ritual called mangalfera, the bride and groom walk around the fire seven times (each a symbol of the four ashrams of life), praying and exchanging vows of duty, love, fidelity, and respect.
