Although we graduated from the same high school just one year apart, we didn't get to know each other until college. We both went to Point Park University in Downtown Pittsburgh to study print journalism. Jon was next in line to become Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper, The Globe, when I started contributing stories. In my second semester of freshman year, I joined the staff as Assistant Sports Editor, and eventually took over as Editor-Elect –– next to serve as Editor-in-Chief after Jon. We started dating as I took the helm of the paper, and the rest is history!
With both of us having graduated from Point Park, Jon coordinated with current students to have the current Editor notify me of a panel consisting of former editors, conveniently on the weekend of our three-year anniversary. Although I was suspicious of a panel on a Saturday evening at the end of finals week, I agreed to speak on the panel with Jon, on the premise that we would still celebrate our anniversary by having dinner at a nice Italian restaurant a few blocks down from campus. When we arrived at Point Park, we went to the newsroom where we first met. With the help of a few wonderful friends, Jon had the newsroom transformed. Every table was covered in lace, sprinkled in rose petals, and the fluorescent lighting had been swapped for twinkling lights and candles. There certainly was no panel, and instead of dinner at that swanky Italian restaurant, he had ordered Chinese food from our favorite restaurant. After he popped the question, we enjoyed our Chinese with champagne and music we enjoy together before we hit the town to celebrate with a few friends.
