It all started with a Skype video call — Kristen was a junior at the University of Mary Washington, applying for a student project in Honduras with a microfinance organization, named La Ceiba. Santi had graduated from UMW a couple of years earlier and was working for that very organization, sitting on the other side of the interview panel. When Kristen's face popped up on Santi's screen from thousands of miles away, he remembered thinking two things: “Wow, she’s cute” and “We might have a lot in common.” He wasn’t wrong. Kristen mentioned her Spanish and Filipino heritage, and Santi was struck by the overlap — his dad is from Spain, his mom from Peru, and both cultures are a big part of who he is. Right away, he could tell that Kristen's roots were just as important to her. But it wasn’t until three years after that video call that their romance truly began. Kristen was living and teaching in Madrid, Spain, while Santi had started a new chapter in Washington, D.C. Even with an ocean between them, they kept in touch — sending emails back and forth about their lives, adventures, and everything in between. Kristen would tell Santi about her life in Spain, and Santi would share updates from Honduras and later D.C. When Kristen moved back home to Virginia Beach, she sent Santi a text, and suddenly, they were talking more — a lot more. Daily texts turned into FaceTime calls, and eventually, in 2017, they made plans to see each other in person for the first time in three years. Kristen came to D.C., and they spent an unforgettable weekend together — full of dancing, great food, deep conversations, and that feeling of maybe this was something really special. Little did we know that a simple video call in 2014 would lead to the adventure of a lifetime — one that brings us here, to our wedding day. Kristen mencionó sus raíces filipinas y españolas, y Santi sintió una conexión inmediata — su papá es de España, su mamá de Perú, y ambas culturas forman parte fundamental de su identidad.
