Question

How long will the wedding ceremony last?

Answer

The wedding mass will take about 60-70 minutes. There is another wedding in the church at 2 pm, so everyone will need to leave the church by 1 pm to make way for them.

Question

What can I expect at a Catholic wedding?

Answer

Marriage is a sacrament in the church, and so takes place in the context of the mass. The order of service will be the following: Liturgy of the Word: entrance, scripture readings, homily, marriage vows Liturgy of the Eucharist: celebration of the Lord’s supper Whether you have been to a Catholic mass or not, we are delighted to celebrate our marriage with you! Please participate as much as you are able/willing; follow the instructions of the priest or the cues of the congregation to know when to sit, stand, or kneel (if you prefer not to kneel, you may sit). Bulletins will have most of the readings and songs. If you are not a practicing Catholic in a state of grace, you will not be able to receive the Eucharist; instead, you may come forward with your arms crossed to receive a blessing or remain seated. Consider using this time for prayer and self-reflection.

Question

Why is marriage a sacrament? What is a sacrament?

Answer

A sacrament is a visible sign of an invisible reality, and a means of receiving God’s grace. Marriage is in some ways a visible representation of the Trinity; the couple is called to love each other freely, fully, faithfully, and fruitfully, and that love is so real that it (God-willing) produces a new life (baby! - or in the case of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit).

Question

Are there local confession times before the wedding?

Answer

No confessions will be held immediately prior to the wedding mass; however, several churches in the area offer the sacrament of reconciliation at the following times: St. Mary’s Catholic Center: Mon-Sat 4-5 pm St. Thomas Aquinas: Mon-Fri 11-12 pm St. Joseph: Wed-Sat 4:30-5:30 pm
