The Proposal - As Told By Len (aka Ethan)

March 29, 2018

The majority of you reading know this know that Krista is an incredibly easy-going person. Let's just say that I put her 'go with the flow' nature to the test when she first laid eyes on her engagement ring 24 hours BEFORE I asked her to marry me. The devil is in the details - or in this case, the ring box was in the wrong backpack pocket. After visiting a jeweler together in early January, Krista still had NO CLUE that I was going to be proposing during our trip to Colombia. She chalked this up to the fact that I hadn't asked her parents for their permission; unbeknownst to her, I called them the night before we left and got their approval (thank you, Jill and Darrel!). I kept the ring on me at all times, hiding it strategically while were in Medellin and no, I didn't put it 'there' to get it safely through customs. When we arrived at the island of Providencia, I had it all planned out. We'd hike the island's tallest mountain on the last day of our trip and I would propose with a backdrop of brilliant turquoise waters and white sand beaches. But something that my future mother-in-law said before was stuck in my mind: "propose to her where she'll least expect it." It was this great advice that ended up revealing my proposal plan; this is because I'm an idiot. To be prepared for the 'unexpected moment', I brought the ring on an island hopping tour the day before our hike. I placed the leather ring box in the same pocket of our bag that Krista had been using to store her phone for the ENTIRE TRIP. To her credit, Krista acted as if she hadn't stumbled across it and did some more acting the next day. As I got on one knee at the island's mountaintop and asked her to marry me, she awkwardly swiveled to face me while I knelt down on what felt like the world's sharpest rock. I can't recall exactly what I said to her as pain surged through my kneecap, but I recall both her saying yes and the two of us enjoying a beautiful view from our own mountaintop.
