Asos is a village on the west coast of the island of Kefalonia, Greece. The traditional architecture, the peaceful landscape and the pebbled beaches compose the natural beauty of Asos. Dominated by the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle, the village of Asos is built on a small peninsula reflecting a beautiful and warm atmosphere.
Sami is a beautiful coastal town located 25.8 km east of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. The village reaches a population of 1000 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in agriculture and fishing. Sami is the second largest port of Kefalonia after Argostoli and it serves daily trips to Patra, Ithaca and Italy. The modern village is built close to ancient Sami, one of the most important archeological discoveries of Kefalonia.
Situated just outside Sami, the Cave of Melissani has a strange appeal. It is one of the most significant places for tourists to visit in Greece. Surprisingly, there is a lake inside the cave that has trees and forests surrounding it. The cave itself is B-shaped with two chambers or halls separated with land or an island in the center. The roof of one of the halls caved in centuries ago letting sunlight filter in. The depth of the lake is 20 to 30 meters. When the sun is right overhead at noon, the sunlight hitting the turquoise-blue waters create a magical illusion and the whole Cave of Melissani suddenly feels lit with blue light.
Antisamos beach is arguably one of the most favourable destinations for swimming and sunbathing in Kefalonia. It is located 30.6 km east from Argostoli and pretty close to the port of Sami. Antisamos distinguishes for its natural beauty that consists of turquoise waters and a marvelous surrounding of green hills and lush vegetation on top of it.
Ainos is the highest mountain not only of Kefalonia but also of all islands located in the Ionian Sea. Among many wildlife species, Mount Ainos is the natural habitat of foxes, birds, ferrets and wild horses. You will also see small lilac flowers (Viola Cephalonica) and one of the rarest types of fir trees in Europe, which only grows in Kefalonia, Abies Cephalonica. On clear days, the view includes the northwest Peloponnese and Aetolia along with the islands of Zakynthos, Lefkada, and Ithaca.
