Lauren asked Matt out for coffee. Lauren will say that she had done so because she had recently moved to the area and was innocently looking for friends, but we all know that her intentions were secretly romantic in nature. Matt, on the other hand, received the invitation for coffee and created an entry in his phone calendar entitled “Date with Lauren”. That was where they were starting from. The coffee invitation came about from an introduction at a community contra dance night and the realization that they both knew someone named Katie (who was a close friend of Lauren’s in college and of Matt’s in high school). Katie proceeded put them in touch. Matt doesn’t drink coffee, but managed to go through two kettles worth of tea during their three hours together. They talked about the things they care about. They talked about working for non-profits and the reasons they do the work they do. They talked about the places they had lived and the communities that call their own. It was easy for them to talk to each other, from the very beginning. Matt realized that he was spending time with one of the most caring, thoughtful, and intelligent people he had ever met. Lauren realized this guy made her laugh and that keeping him around might be entertaining. They wanted to spend more time together. So they did. They fell in love. Now they are here.
