Our Story

How we met: Matt and I both were trying out dating apps in early March of 2021 when we landed on each other’s profiles. I remember reading Matt’s profile and being compelled by his smile, and most importantly, his faith statement. I “liked” his profile, I happily discovered he had already “liked” mine. I decided to send him a message, which said “Hi Matt! I also love Mexican food!” (responding to one of his interests) And the rest is history, as they say… Our story is proof that God can use anything, even a dating app! Our first date: On March 21, 2021, Matt and I met for the very first time on the median of a grocery store parking lot in Coshocton, Ohio – not a joke! When we selected a place to meet half-way between where we were living at the time, Matt picked a nice restaurant inside the grocery store that happened to be closed even though the website didn’t say it was (thanks, Covid). Our rendezvous on the parking lot median helped us decide where to go. And what better place than the Dairy Queen across the street! We had the best first date, eating ice cream and talking about God’s activity in our lives, and spent the rest of our afternoon walking around Roscoe Village enjoying the beautiful spring day. When I said goodbye to Matt that afternoon, I was sure that I would be seeing him again. We became officially boyfriend and girlfriend 5 weeks later! The Dating Phase: Our relationship unfolded with many wonderful adventures including Matt moving to Columbus and starting his new job, many fishing, biking, and hiking excursions, finding a deer antler, watching wildlife do odd things, making new friends, presenting Christmas PowerPoints with the Beine family, two trips to Charleston to visit Rachel's family, and countless other amazing experiences together. But most importantly, we sought after God together and individually about the direction of our relationship. And over time, He brought us a peace about becoming husband and wife someday. Our Engagement: After just over a year of dating, Matt set up the most magical engagement at Clifton Gorge near Yellow Springs. On the morning of April 23, he convinced me to get up early and go with him for a full day of hiking. Many have asked if I was suspicious, and yes, I was, but in the very best way. 😊 As I went along the path at the park and enjoyed all the nature, pointing out early spring wildflowers and enjoying the sun, I noticed that Matt seemed to be on a mission. I decided it was like we were on a scavenger hunt, looking for the spot where he would possibly propose – but there was also a possibility he might not – but then why were we both acting so strange? We hiked up a rocky hill in the gorge by the river and then Matt told me he was tired from the walk up. I gave him a little hug, and he pointed out a huge knot on a tree across the water (which was the sign for his friend who was hiding on top of the cliff as the photographer!) Suddenly, he went down on one knee, and said “Rachel, I love you very much, and I want to ask you, will you marry me?” I said “YES!” Matt picked out the most beautiful ring for me, all himself and slid it on my finger. We did more hiking that day, but I am pretty sure I stopped looking at all the nature and only looked at my hand and at him. And we spent the end of our engagement weekend driving around telling family and calling and texting friends to share our exciting news. The Wedding: We are thrilled to share our wedding day with our family and friends this fall. Even more than that, we can’t wait to start our lives as a married couple serving Jesus together!
