We met about a month after Dakota moved to Reno. We originally met online, but had our first date at a little coffee shop, which turned into lunch, beer tasting, and many more dates in the following days!
The first hike we ever went on together was the Genoa trail in 2017. Come 2020, Dakota insisted that we take the pups on that hike, which should have been my first clue because Dakota usually isn't the one to plan a hiking trip. As we were getting ready to start the trail, Dakota refused to let me carry the backpack, which should have been my second clue since I always prefer to carry the backpack. After hiking for a while, I noticed that he was being unusually quiet, and he was setting the pace uncomfortably fast. This should have been my third clue since we normally enjoy hiking at a leisurely pace, not sprinting to the top. Once we finally reached the waterfall, Dakota set up a timed camera to get a photo of us, and as the camera got to 8 seconds, he dropped to his knee so the camera could capture the exact moment. As he slipped the ring on, Dakota said, "Wait, you never said yes," which I replied, "Because you never asked!" Turns out he forgot the small detail of actually asking me to marry him. Despite all the clues, I was pleasantly surprised, and of course said YES! We planned to head to my parents house for the night, and Dakota said they were unaware he was proposing, so it would be a surprise for them too. However, as we pulled into their driveway, I noticed that my brother and Dakota's parents were also there. I was shocked to see everyone, and I was extremely impressed by the time and detail that Dakota put into the proposal and surprise party. I could not have pictured a better day!
