How We Met

Jill’s Side: It all started when I was Nathan’s RA during college. On a Monday evening, at one of our residence hall events, I noticed him hanging out in the corner and decided to go over and chat. We had a nice, casual conversation, and I didn’t think much of it—until the next day. On Tuesday night, there was a knock on my door. I opened it to find Nathan standing there, asking how strict I was about quiet hours. He mentioned he was planning to play pool and even invited me to join him. I had to laugh—I was already in my pajamas, ready to sleep, so I politely declined. Still, his gesture was thoughtful and unexpected, and it stuck with me. Then, on Thursday, while I was sitting at the front desk on duty, Nathan stopped by and started a conversation with me. We talked easily, and I remember thinking how genuine and charming he seemed. The next morning, I woke up to find a note slipped under my door. Nathan wrote that he felt bad for waking me up earlier in the week and admitted he’d wanted to ask for my Snapchat when we were chatting at the desk but chickened out. The note ended with a request for me to come over to his room next door to give it to him, along with a detailed list of when he’d be around. I couldn’t help but smile at his mix of boldness and sweetness, so I went over to his room later that day and gave him my Snapchat. What started as casual conversations quickly grew into something more. Over the next few days, we began talking constantly, spending time together, watching movies, and going on walks. Nathan’s Side: It all started on a Monday evening during one of the residence hall events. I was in the corner answering a work email when Jill came up to talk to me. I remember thinking she seemed really nice and sweet. We had a casual conversation, and while it was brief, I left the event feeling like I wanted to get to know her better. On Tuesday night, I knocked on her door. I had an honest reason — I was going to be playing poker Wednesday night with a few friends, and I wanted to check the rules about quiet hours. I also just wanted an excuse to talk to her again. I even asked if she wanted to come play pool with me. She was in her pajamas, so she politely declined, but her smile made me feel like I hadn’t completely embarrassed myself. A few days later, while she was sitting at the front desk on duty, I stopped by and struck up another conversation. We talked so easily, and I realized how much I liked her. I then walked her up to her room after her desk hours were over but I got distracted by a few friends before we got to her door and I wasn’t able to ask for her snapchat that night. The next morning, I worked up the nerve to write her a note since I really wanted to talk to her again and try and ask her out. It took me a few tries since my handwriting isn’t great, and I wanted it to be perfect. In the note, I apologized for waking her up earlier in the week, and admitted I’d wanted to ask for her Snapchat when we talked earlier. I also told her when I’d be around if she wanted to stop by my room next door. After slipping the note under her door, I was nervous. I had no idea how she’d respond, but I figured it was up to her now. When she came over later that day to give me her Snapchat, I was so excited. It was her way of letting me know she liked me too. It was amazing since I was heading home for the weekend. That weekend, I spent time with Jacob and Mackenzie out on Janet and Steve’s boat, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Jill. When I got back, we started talking constantly. We spent more time together, watching movies and going on walks, and our connection kept growing. When it became clear that we both wanted the same things in life, I knew I had to ask her out. Looking back, I love how our story started with something as simple as a conversation and a note. Jill turned out to be everything I hoped for and more, and now I get to spend my days making even more memories with her.
