Question

What is the proper dresscode for a Bavarian wedding?

Answer

In Bavaria, we love tradition – and one of the most charming parts is our traditional attire: Tracht (Dirndl & Lederhosen). It’s completely normal here to wear Tracht to a wedding – even if it’s not officially required. And likewise, if the dress code is Tracht, showing up in classic formalwear is also totally fine. So whether you come in Dirndl, Lederhosen, a suit, or a dress – wear whatever makes you feel festive and comfortable. The most important thing is: You’re there!

Question

What is a Bavarian "Brautentführung"

Answer

The Brautentführung (literally "bride kidnapping") is a traditional German (especially Bavarian and Austrian) wedding custom. Despite the dramatic name, it’s a fun and symbolic ritual rather than a real kidnapping. What Happens uuring a Brautentführung: The bride is “kidnapped” by her friends, usually male, during the wedding celebration—often right after the ceremony or during the reception. They take her to a nearby pub, restaurant, or tavern (or sometimes just another room or area). The groom must - together with help from the guests - find and rescue her. Once he finds her, there is typically a playful negotiation or challenge—sometimes involving games, riddles, or lighthearted bribes. The groom may have to buy drinks for the group or pay a symbolic ransom to get his bride back. It usually ends with everyone sharing drinks and returning to the main party.
