A Rom-Com without credits

They say Brooklyn is full of eight million stories. But sometimes, all it takes is one glance across a crowded room to begin yours.

For Justin, that moment arrived at Zavien’s clothing launch. It was supposed to be just another night of photography, fashion, & friends, a typical evening behind the lens. She walked in. Statuesque, opalescent, lips painted in scarlet. Eyes soulful like the magic hour from Brooklyn Tower. She didn't just enter she glided, moving through the crowd as though the night made room for her. Intrigued with interest she approached him. A few words were exchanged small, simple, unscripted. Earth shifted. As the night ended she left him with a line he never forgot, get my number from Zeandra. Then she was gone. When someone extraordinary enters your life they don’t fade. For weeks Kristin lingered in Justin’s thoughts. He asked Zee about her every chance he could. He told his students he had met someone unforgettable, someone he couldn’t stop thinking about, but somehow let slip away. Was it longing, fate, or just New York with all its crowded rooms & missed connections playing another one of its timing games? Two months later spring kissed, Justin had a fresh haircut, the school year winding down, the weather tipping into that first intoxicating stretch of warm air. Laughter spilled out of Diana’s house where friends gathered. Suddenly Kristin came to mind. This time Justin called Zee & within hours she was there. The tall girl with scarlet lips stood before him again. They walked & talked, closing the distance that had hung between them for weeks. This time the number was exchanged, the connection made real. Kristin asked to meet Cassius, Justin’s beloved dog, & walked him as though she had always been part of their story. Every great series needs a defining first date. For them it was Evelina. Good food, great conversation, & an almost a premature ending. Somewhere between apps & laughter Kristin glanced at Justin’s sneakers & thought oh no, is he just a broke photographer. Luckily charm & humor triumphed where footwear failed. Their first inside story, proof this relationship would be built on humor & romance. Their rhythm set in effortlessly. Strolls through Ft Greene Park. Chicken wing picnics & brunch at Choice Market. Conversations that stretched til dawn, sometimes funny, sometimes serious, always meaningful. Trips grew into traditions. Moments into memories. They teased another, challenged each other, pushed to evolve. If their relationship had a tagline it would be simple, evolving the standard. Love isn’t just about finding someone who makes you laugh, it’s about finding someone who makes you better without making you feel like you have to be anyone but yourself. Then came the big question. On leap day February 29, 2023 Justin & Kristin arrived at The River Café in Dumbo, Classy, his suit jacket, her dress, the city skyline shimmering behind them. Justin handed her a Cocktail menu he designed. Kristin laughed at the clever names until she reached the final option, Marry Me Mojito. Before she could catch her breath Justin dropped to one knee & spoke from the heart. From the night we met I knew you were different. You’ve been my favorite conversation, my best laugh, my quiet place. Will you marry me? Kristin gasped, hand to her mouth, choking on surprise. Tears filled her eyes as she broke into laughter & sobs at once. Her lips, as boldly red as that first night, formed the words that changed everything, yes a thousand times yes. The ring caught the light as applause erupted. Strangers clapped, staff congratulated, & for a moment it felt like the whole city celebrated with them. In a place where everyone is searching, for cabs, late night pizza, Justin & Kristin had already found what mattered most, each other, just two blocks apart. From that night their story was no longer about chance encounters, but about their shared future. Sometimes the best love stories don’t happen in fairy tales. They happen in Dumbo, on leap day, with a cocktail dress, a Marry Me Mojito, & a yes that turned a glance into a lifetime.
