The Proposal

In October 2018, we went on vacation to Hong Kong. One day, Sai Yan had planned for us to hike up 獅子山 (Lion Rock Mountain). This wasn't the easiest trail and we have never actually hiked before. The trail was steep. The stairs weren't really stairs, but jagged rocks that you actually had to climb. And...there were actual monkeys everywhere. At the first check point there was already a good view of the city and I was already exhausted. He practically had to beg me to continue. We did continue, but this sea-level Houston girl wasn't coping well with the elevation. By the time we were near the top, we were even using our hands to climb up the rocks. Once we finally arrived, there was a small flat area that you could take in the awesome view of Hong Kong. Here's the kicker though: I am actually terrified of heights that have any sort of risk of falling from. There aren't even railings up there. Sai Yan kept trying to pull me over to the side away from the few other people up there, but the side was too close to the edge for me. I wouldn't go. This time, he was begging me. At this point, I caught on to what he was probably trying to do (basically ruining it), and so I finally went over to where he wanted me. In the middle of his speech, some guy interrupted him to take a picture of him and his girlfriend. Sai Yan said he was busy and denied him. After he finished his speech there was a significant pause, so I thought "Oh, he must have just wanted to say something nice." So I asked him if he was going to take that guy's picture, but he said no and finally got down on his knee and proposed to me. -Kirstie
