Working full-time, attending graduate school, teaching at Clemson University, and attempting to travel as often as possible did not afford much time for tedious tasks like packing up and moving. However, Kirsten decided to move across town anyway and hired Tiger Moving to pack her belongings and move her. January 2, 2020, was a cold, rainy morning. When Tiger Moving arrived, Jorge was the Supervisor on-call. He was upbeat, smiling ear-to-ear, and energetic. She was late waking up, tired, and anything but energetic. Jorge let her know that he was on-call and when the other employee arrived, he would be leaving. However, after a few moments of packing together and talking non-stop, he decided to stay and help. When the workday ended, Jorge offered to return to help Kirsten unpack. He apparently had resolved to help someone each day stating, "besides, I know where it all is because I packed it. It'll be much easier and faster if you let me help you." Anyone that knows Kirsten is aware she isn't good at admitting she needs help. But little did he know, she had resolved to give herself some grace in 2020; part of that was admitting when she could use some help. Hesitantly, she accepted his offer and before they both knew it, the night had passed. Jorge offered to walk Myles with her before departing. When the walk ended, Kirsten realized they were locked out. What was quoted as a 3-hour job, turned into an all-day affair lasting well until 2 a.m. awaiting a locksmith on her doorstep. The next day, Jorge called to ask for a second date. Kirsten replied, "No." Two weeks passed by and Jorge found himself moving Kirsten's neighbor. He called to say, "Hello" and to announce it happened to be his birthday. When his workday ended, he asked to spend the evening eating chili and watching a movie. Kirsten replied, "You want to spend your birthday with me? You don't even know me." He said, "I can't think of a better way to spend my birthday. " This is where it began.
Kirsten was working in California as a COVID-19 crisis relief nurse. She hadn't seen Jorge in weeks and though the relationship was new in many ways, she recognized a huge void in her life. Meanwhile, Jorge was back in Greenville being sneaky! He wanted to propose but knew he first needed to meet her parents. Jorge arranged to visit North Carolina for the weekend unbeknownst to Kirsten and then drove 6 hours to meet her parents. He brought 2 dogs, empanadas, and an engagement ring. Before leaving, he asked for her hand in marriage. One week later, Jorge flew from South Carolina to California. They decided to drive to Lake Tahoe for the day to visit a friend. While hiking around Fallen Leaf Lake, Jorge couldn't wait any longer. He pretended to pose for a photo but then knelt down on one knee. With the most breathtaking backdrop, amidst a pandemic, and with a very hopeful look, he asked her to be his forever. She said, "Right now?!" and then cried. Of course the answer was yes!
