Travel Note
Last Ferry The last connecting ferry from Vancouver Island to Hornby is 6:00 pm (or 9:30 pm on Friday evenings). Take this into account when making your travel plans as the crossing time from Nanaimo is 2 hours following a 1 hour drive to the Buckley Bay Ferry. Reservations We can't stress enough how important is to make a reservation for the big ferry from the mainland. Unfortunately, the little ferries from Buckley Bay and Denman are first come first served and non reserve-able. These ferries can get very busy in the peak season so be sure to a lot time for that as well. BC Ferries Experience Card - Save $$$ To save on travel costs, we highly recommend that you purchase a BC Ferries Experience Card. You can buy the card at Buckley Bay. You preload the card with credit, then the card is debited at a discounted rate. The remaining credit does not expire and can be used on most BC Ferries routes.
Travel Note
Driving Directions 1) Travel To Vancouver Island Several ferry connections are available between Mainland BC and Vancouver Island. Most people come via Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay. We STRONGLY suggest making a reservation for the Ferry. BC Ferries can be reached at 1-888-BCFERRY or at www.bcferries.com 2) Drive To Buckley Bay Buckley Bay is 1 hour north of Nanaimo, 3 hours north of Victoria, or 30 minutes south of the Comox Valley. From the Highway 19 (Island Highway), take Exit 101 to Buckley Bay. A short connecting road brings you from the main highway directly to the ferry terminal. 3) Ferry To Denman Island A ten-minute ferry crossing from Buckley Bay brings you to Denman Island. A short drive across Denman brings you to Gravelly Bay. Just follow the signs and the traffic. 4) Ferry To Hornby Island From Gravelly Bay, another ten-minute ferry ride brings you to Hornby.
House Or Rental
Hornby Island is a very beautiful place and therefor accommodation goes fast. Please visit the website below to source accommodation. Unfortunately, a lot of the rentals are one week minimum so you will have to read through to find ones with nightly accommodations. Alternatively, you can rent an RV and camp at the local campsite called "Brad's Dad's Land" or "Tribune Bay" which can be found on the website linked below under accommodation.
House Or Rental
A great option would be to rent an RV as accommodation is very limited on Hornby. If you chose to rent an RV we suggest renting from somewhere on the island as its costly to bring an RV on the big ferry. Island RV is on the direct route to the Hornby ferry from the big ferry so you wont even need to back track to pick up your RV. I've linked the website below. Another website to check out is www.rvezy.com which is essentially Air BNB for RV's.
