About West Adams
Welcome to West Adams! In the 1930s, West Adams became a center of Black life in L.A., earning the nickname "Sugar Hill" after the Supreme Court overturned segregationist covenants on property ownership.
West Adams has been home to prominent celebrities like Joe Louis, Ray Charles, Hattie McDaniel, and Little Richard. Landmarks such as the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company building and the historic First AME Church on Harvard Boulevard, known as Ray Charles Square, add to the neighborhood's history.
