How We Met

Patience is the key

Unbeknownst to Nancy, Kevin first met her during the first week of freshman year, but they wouldn't meet again until 2 years later. All freshmen at Purdue partake in a week long orientation called Boiler Gold Rush (BGR). Dorms was broken into "factions", similar to Harry Potter (not as cool though), and participated in drinking delicious Purdue Kool-aid. Nancy at the time lived in the student apartments which was a co-ed community. Kevin, however, lived in an all boys dormitory which meant he would need to travel outside his dorm group to find romance. Kevin's roommate at the time, Niall, understood his plight and happened to have a good friend, Michael, who was in different BGR group that had girls. He said that he knew just the perfect person to introduce to Kevin to and that he would introduce her at the next BGR event. The following day, everyone went to the club fair and Michael grabbed Kevin and tried to introduce him to the girl he had been talking about. Turns out the girl that Michael was trying to introduce to Kevin was Nancy! Kevin being too scared to talk to girls at the time decided to run away since she was too pretty and he felt like he needed to gain a bit more confidence before talking to her. Fast forward 2 years, Nancy needed volunteer experience for her resume so she decided to join the Asian American Association (Triple A) as the director of marketing. When Kevin, who had been a member of Triple A since freshman year, found out that Nancy was becoming director of marketing, he knew that this was his moment to force the stars to align so he asked to be placed in marketing under Nancy. This wasn’t the same Kevin as freshman year. He had learned a lot from the Triple A boys on how to become more confident. On the first marketing assignment together, Kevin was bewildered that Nancy was using powerpoint to make flyers, so he decided to show her how to use photoshop. They bonded over photoshop and the rest was history.

The Proposal

4.10.19

Kevin knew he was going to propose to Nancy during their trip to Maui in April, however he didn’t really have an exact plan before heading to Maui. One night during the trip Kevin was looking on his phone to locate a nice scenic spot to catch the sunrise. As he zoomed in on the north shore, he found a landmark called heart-shaped rock. He knew at that moment that this was where he was going to propose. He told Nancy that they were going to catch the sunrise the next day and would have to wake-up super early. The next morning they both woke up and began the journey in the dark towards the heart-shaped rock. The drive was pretty harrowing since there were narrow roads with freshly fallen rocks from the steep cliffs above. After passing through a bit of rain, the sky began to clear-up. When they made it to the trailhead, they were greeted by a sign that basically said to not go any further since lots of people die every year from rogue waves the blow-hole near the heart-shaped rock. Kevin was determined to get to the rock so he told Nancy it’s fine and that they should proceed. After scrambling over sharp rocks for 20 minutes, they encountered a second sign that further reinforced how dangerous it was to proceed any further. Again, Kevin ignored the sign and they continued down the rock path. They eventually made it as the sun began to rise over the horizon! Kevin wanted to take a photo, so he had set-up the tripod with his camera and asked Nancy to get in position. Instead of a photo, Kevin actually had set the camera on movie recording mode and then got down on one knee and asked the important question. Nancy obviously said yes! They then lingered around the area for a bit to watch the blow-hole and take additional photos next to the heart shaped rock. One thing to note was, in photos online Kevin had assumed that the heart was like the size of a car, however in reality, it was like the size of a watermelon.
