Kevin and Makenzie met at a hockey game at the Calgary Flames Community Arena. The Mount Royal Cougars were playing the Saskatchewan Huskies in the first round of Playoffs. Some of Kevin's best friends were playing in the game so he wanted to go watch to support his friends and maybe do a little scouting for the next round of playoffs where the U of C was to play the winner of that game. However, he did not end up watching much of the game... Makenzie was on her way home from Red Deer that same night and her friend Julie invited her to the game. She was hesitant to come because she had school the next day and had been driving for a few hours, but chose to attend in the end. She did her makeup quick in the car and had no idea what she was walking in to... They were introduced through mutual friends and the rest of the game Kevin knew he had to talk to her. Looking back now, Kevin is shocked that she talked to him as much as she did during the game because he was wearing jeans that were a little too tight, a white T-shirt, again probably too tight and a jean vest - just a fashion icon. Regardless, the conversation went well and he tried to engage her every chance he got. Finally, Krystal, our friend who Kenz thought was Kev's girlfriend at the time, asked Kev if he wanted to switch seats with her so he could be beside Kenz. Kenz was a little weirded out that Krystal's boyfriend was talking to her so much but that was clarified by Julie that they were not dating. The conversation was going really well and finally Kevin got the courage to ask Kenz for her phone number. She agreed and left not long after, I believe to head to Hudson's South. After she left, Kevin turned to Jona and said to him "I'm going to marry that girl, mark my words".
Kevin was having an all too common Sunday Funday during his time at the U of C with a group of his team mates. This Sunday, however, things were a little different. Kevin was a little quieter than usual because he had his head buried in his phone. He was texting this new "chick" that he was pretty smitten with. The boys noticed this and finally just told Kev to invite her out with us, and boy was he happy about that! How else do a group of people get around on a Sunday but a limo. How a bunch of college students could afford a limo that often was beyond me but Kevin was secretly happy we were going to pick Makenzie up in a limo. Kevin and his friends picked Makenzie and her friend Amy up in the limo and headed to Hudson's 12th Ave but to their disappointment, it was closed. After a short google search, the only place that was available was Boudoir Rouge. Yes, the strip club. Although Kenz accidently spilled not 1 but 2 entire half bottles of wine on Kev's lap, they had a great night and started to develop a strong bond...
Rule #1 Nails Done Rule #2 Surprise For those of you who don't know, Kevin is not very good at making decisions. The best and easiest decision of his life was asking Makenzie to marry him. Having said that, it was an absolute nightmare trying to plan how that was going to happen. After many options falling through, Kevin was running out of, in his mind, great ideas. His last plan involved getting a couples massage to hopefully relax and calm himself down before he had to make the biggest gesture in his life. Let's just say that was a waste of money. Makenzie thought that they were going for a regular camping weekend and en route we would stop for a massage at the Nordic Spa and a quick dog walk before finally reaching our destination. Prior to the weekend, Kevin arranged with Kolton to hide in the woods to capture the moment on camera. Kevin bought a bottle of champagne for Kolton to throw on ice to celebrate the occasion. Thanks to google maps, Kevin and Kolton arranged a spot that would be perfect to "bend the knee". Back to the massage... Makenzie was loving hers. She was so relaxed and getting all the enjoyment one does, or should, from a good massage. Kevin on the other hand couldn't enjoy it at all. The only thing he could think and focus on was what he was going to say to Makenzie and that he sure hoped the ring was safe in the car. After the massage Kenz was relaxed and happy and Kevin was stressed and sweaty. That being said, things were going to plan. On the way to the camp ground, Kevin pulled over at Wedge Pond for Ned's walk. About three quarters around the pond, they stopped at an orange water bottle, Kolton's marker. After taking a self proclaimed famous Pano, Kevin got down on one knee and their lives were changed forever. It didn't happen the way Kevin drew it up the 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd time but it was everything Kenz said she wanted. She had two criteria: 1. Make sure her nails were painted (check) 2. She wanted to be surprised (check)
