How We Met: March 12, 2010

A chance encounter, three years, and a LinkedIn message

There is a museum of Himalayan art in New York City. Neither of us knew anything about Himalayan art, but one fateful evening in 2010 we each found ourselves walking through the doors for a grown-up storytelling event. Maeve came for the museum. Kevin came to hear one of his favorite musicians tell stories. Maeve saw Kevin sitting alone by the window, and mosied over to deliver what can only be described as a cliched pickup line (though Maeve disputes that to this day). What followed was an evening of darting eyes and wondering glances, each of us attempting to puzzle out whether the other was interested. After talking throughout the night, we exchanged information and saw each other once more before timing and other interests led to a natural fade. ***Fast forward three years.*** An article on LinkedIn caught Maeve's eye – written by a young man in State College who’d just survived cancer. The article was beautifully written, but it took Maeve a full day to put two and two together and realize who the writer was. Another few days went by while she debated whether or not to reach out. Thankfully, she didn't have to wait long. One state away and with a full year of immunotherapy behind him, Kevin was ready to emerge into the world again. He reached out to Maeve over LinkedIn almost exactly three years to the day since we first met. That started us talking again, and soon Kevin made a trip to the city to stay with a friend and to see Maeve. Our first official date began as a Friday dinner on the Upper West Side and ended 48 hours later on Sunday afternoon. That date was six years ago, and we've been together ever since.

The Engagement

3.14.2018

A last-minute trip to Chile as chaperones for a college chorus proved the perfect opportunity to pop the question. The ring had been sitting around for a few months, while Kevin planned and schemed, but was foiled at every turn. Then came the call of the Andes, and the perfect plan fell into his lap. A zillion avocados and a romantic walk on the beach later, Kevin knelt into the Pacific Ocean to profess his intentions. Maeve said "yes" while dragging Kevin away from the pounding surf, later running into the ocean herself to retrieve their washed away shoes. And the two of them were promised to one another for all of their days.
