How We Met

Do we count the times in high school, when my friend and I would go watch Nolan’s track meets, scoping the field for cute boys, and Kevin Holmes was among such cuties? What about the few college parties, where maybe we made eye contact but no words were spoken? Or the times we ran into each other at my friend’s Seattle apartment building when Kevin had that aloof cool guy vibe and I was too nervous to say much of anything? The time that finally stuck was when my best friend was getting ready to go to a bachelor/bachelorette party for a couple of high school friends, and apparently I persuaded all involved to let me tag along. Over steaming bowls of Thai food in a cramped Seattle apartment, there he was. The elusive Kevin Holmes, high school track cutie turned way too cool guy, and I took my chance (with the help of two very good wingmen). We ate noodles, he bought me a paloma, we danced, I crashed the wedding a couple days later and he moved back home from California (to be with me, I’m sure of it) later that month, and we haven’t spent more than a week apart since then. So, I guess you could say we’re high school sweethearts, in a really roundabout way.

The Engagement

After years of living together, traveling, and enjoying every bit of life with each other and our pets- the time was right. We had been to lots of new places together over the years, but at that point we had not had the opportunity to return to some of the spots we had loved. So when the opportunity came about to return to Ucluelet, B.C. for Jill to get a second tattoo from a wonderful artist there, it felt like kismet. A small peninsula on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Ucluelet sits surrounded by swales of ocean, black rocks jutting through waves, and the dark forested mountains above make you feel like you're standing at the edge of a dream. We walked the Pacific Coast trail and found a perfect spot hidden away, and knowing Jill would remember the spot, I dropped her off at the tattoo appointment the next day and made moves. I left a note at our hotel room and hiked out to the spot with food and drink (and a ring!) and set up a charcuterie picnic. Hours passed and it felt like the tattoo must have been done by then....and I started to panic. Turns out the artist wanted to do a much larger piece than we had anticipated (it turned out amazing) and Jill did remember the exact spot, I caught her rushing down the trail to meet me. There we exchanged words and the ring, with grey whales breaching in the distance and nothing but the sound of crashing waves upon the rocks. After all the tears and my amateur attempts at timer photos, we went back and got dressed up and went out to eat the best meal of our lives. Now we will always have a place we both love, and a dream we both share- there for us to return to.
