Bethany and Kevin have a mutual friend from Guatemala named Hans. While visiting Kevin in Lynchburg, Hans introduced Bethany and Kevin. The first introductions took place at Kevin's yardsale where Bethany bought a lamp. She still has the lamp.

Kevin and John, Bethany's dad, went to dinner one Monday night to talk about Kevin and Bethany's future. When Kevin received John's blessing, he asked Kevin when he was planning to propose. Kevin responded he would like to propose as soon as he finds the opportunity. On the drive home to Lynchburg, Kevin decided that he could not wait any longer. He surprised Bethany by inviting her for an evening drive. Bethany did not suspect anything since this is something they regularly do. Kevin drove around town and started pointing out spots where important events took place in their relationship. Eventually, he took Bethany to the Monument Terrace. This was where they went on many dates, and it has always been Bethany's favorite location in Lynchburg. Bethany suspected that Kevin would propose in a month or two, so she was greatly surprised when Kevin asked her that night! She could not have asked for a more meaningful and thoughtful proposal.
