How it Started

12 Years Later...

Once upon a time, Maggie and Andrew were 12 and 17. Andrew was at Maggie's grandparent's house for a pool party with her older sister Melinda and their friends--and Maggie caught a glimpse of the most handsome boy she'd ever seen. He, of course, didn't notice her at all. That would have been weird. Fast forward 12 years, and Andrew definitely noticed Maggie. After some titilating conversation about Winco, Andrew asked her out, which Maggie promptly declined. Obviously that didn't last. A few weeks later, Maggie was getting ready to attend her coworker’s wedding alone. She had reached out to an old friend, and he turned out to be a real Wanker--if you know, you know. Having decided there was nothing wrong with going alone, she thought, perhaps, there was someone who may want to go with her. She pulled out her phone, and she sent him a text, "Hey, what are you up to today?" Andrew, despite doing an Instacart order at Safeway, responded immediately: "Nothing, what about you?" He got in her car two hours later, and Maggie knew it was game over. He made a joke about the Beatles--though neither of them can remember what exactly was said--and she was a goner. 12 years had changed a lot–Maggie had a 3 year old daughter, Andrew had a hair cut–but when it came to spending time together, Maggie was just as smitten as she had been long ago…this time, Andrew saw her, and it was not weird. They had a marvelous time.

How He Asked...

Don't ask about mosquitos!

Two years later, Andrew and Maggie took a trip to Ocean Shores. Little did Maggie know, Andrew had a plan--he had messaged all of her friends and his family that he would be proposing the next day, but the plan just had to change. Between Maggie's revelation that she had never seen the sun set on the beach and the oncoming storm--seriously, worst timing ever--Andrew course corrected. They walked to a little pub half a mile away and waited for the sun to begin setting. Maggie tried to convince Andrew just to walk back to the apartment for the night, but Andrew was having none of it. He all but dragged her to the beach, the sky full of soft oranges and pinks, and they found a driftwood tree to sit on. Andrew played some music and when Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen came on, they tried--and failed--to slow dance on a sand dune. Seriously, what were they thinking? Those two, dancing? We're all just lucky nobody got hurt. And then their song came on--I Don't want to Set the World on Fire by the Ink Spots. Andrew stood up, already smiling, and pulled out a letter he'd written. He got down on one knee, the sea and sky behind him, and asked Maggie the single most important question she’d ever heard. He didn't even wait for her to say yes before he handed her the ring– They still laugh about this by the way. It was perfect. They walked back from the beach, hand in hand, and knew their journey was only just beginning. Oh, but whatever you do--do NOT ask Maggie how she feels about mosquitos.
