We met in college entirely by chance when Ryan was randomly assigned to be roommates with one of Sydney’s best friends. We occasionally hung out in group settings and eventually started spending time together just the two of us. One night in January 2014, we talked until 7:00 am and realized how much we had in common. Ryan spent the next month pursuing Sydney - even taking five hours to build her a stellar LinkedIn page and driving an hour to rescue her in Westchester, NY after she crashed her car in a blizzard - until she realized Ryan was everything she ever wanted in a partner. On March 2, 2014, we made our relationship official and we moved into our first apartment together that summer.
We were three days into the most incredible week in Iceland when we visited Thingvellir National Park, saw three free roaming sheep in a meadow slightly in the distance, and decided to go see them up close. As we were walking towards them, we saw a little path leading into a moss covered forest. Ryan suggested we go in and check it out, and with his coaxing after Sydney’s initial concerns about the muddy path leading into the woods, we went into the forest. We walked around the forest for about 10 minutes before stopping and looking up at some whimsical trees - which is when Ryan decided to propose! Sydney started crying as he got down on one knee and asked, “Will you spend the rest of your life with me?” to which she responded, “Of course!” We then emerged from the forest to continue on our quest to see those sheep up close (spoiler alert: we succeeded and it was magical).
