Right in the center of town, just a block from where we'll be getting married is the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded over 200 years ago as the 7th of California's 21 missions and affectionately known as the "Jewel of the California Missions." Once inside you can explore the surreal space and its multicultural heritage—spanning Native American (including the Acjachemen people), Spanish, Mexican, and European influences—while exploring stunning gardens with California native plants, ancient ruins of the original structures, a historic chapel where Saint Serra once celebrated Mass, and a museum featuring exhibits like "Mission Treasures" and a Native American Interpretive Room. This iconic landmark, the birthplace of Orange County, is a must-see!
Just a block away from the wedding venue, Los Rios Street Historic District, California's oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood, where charming 18th- and 19th-century adobes blend history with modern appeal in San Juan Capistrano. This walkable gem features antique shops for unique finds, art galleries showcasing local talent, and cozy spots like The Tea House on Los Rios for afternoon tea, Ramos House Cafe for Southern-inspired brunch and our favorite shop, The Cottage Gallery! As you make your way to the end of the galleries, there's a spot to relax and unwind in Los Rios Park amid butterfly gardens, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a small petting zoo—perfect for families. With its unpaved paths and lush landscaping, it's an ideal spot for a leisurely wander, soaking in the historic vibe just steps from the train station and our wedding!
This is the beach closest to our house, loaded with everything you could possible ask: A scenic pier, awesome waves, some of Cali's best surfers and family friendly spaces to swim, volleyball nets, public grills, clean bathrooms and outdoor rinsing stations, massive tents, and an incredible beach bar: DoHo Cafe! This bar and food spot almost should include its own section, as it features live music to listen to while you play cornhole, with drinks and snacks in hand off their massive menu. It's no wonder why we we regularly ride our bikes here along the San Juan Creek Trail to frequent this spot!
Just down the street from us, and next to Doho State Beach (our primary beach) is Dana Point Harbor, which offers a wealth of coastal adventures with stunning ocean and cliffside views, including year-round whale watching tours spotting massive blue whales (peak in summer, like July), dolphins, and orcas, plus hands-on marine education at the Ocean Institute with exhibits, touch tanks, and sea life cruises. Rent kayaks or paddleboards for serene harbor explorations, relax at family-friendly Baby Beach with shallow waters and playgrounds, or stroll the scenic boardwalk for walkable waterfront dining at spots like Wind & Sea Restaurant or Harbor Grill—many with patio seating overlooking yachts and sunsets. For guests staying longer with time for day trips, catch the ferry to Catalina Island for hiking and snorkeling, charter sailboats for ocean outings, or unwind on sunset cruises with cocktails and panoramic wildlife views—all set against the picturesque Pacific scenery.
