How I Met Your Mother

~2018

I’d known who Kendall was for about a year before I met her. When I started working for Love Your Melon I ran all of our social media ads. Twice a week I had to look through hundreds of photos from the most recent shoot and I kept choosing photos of Kendall. I thought she was cute..obviously.. but professionally speaking her eyes and her smile always made the best-performing ads.  If you can imagine, I usually had three monitors positioned about a foot and a half around my head, and sometimes Kendall was on all three at the same time, which probably looked a little creepy. But it was my job, so it was professional. Fast forward about a year and the company went to Denver for a tradeshow. I walked in the door of the Airbnb late on the first night from setting up the booth and remember meeting Kendall for the first time. It wasn’t those ‘love-at-first-sight’ kind of feelings (because professionally it was a work event), but I remember it so clearly. She was sitting up at the bar laughing (as she usually does) with a big smile hanging out with the other girls.  She was a lot tinier than I originally thought, but even more stunning than what I was used to seeing in ads.  We became friends throughout the trip, Kendall was fun to be around and laughed at all my jokes, which no one else thought were funny. She was always the perfect drinking buddy in the evenings after the events and was always the center of attention (in a good way, you wanted to be around her).  After the event, Kendall started taking more shifts at the office. I always made a point to pick on her as I passed her office on the way to mine or bring up some inside joke about the trip to Denver.  One day Kendall was in the kitchen area at the office and one of my coworkers said to me casually, "wow, Kendall is such wife material." Not because she happened to be in the kitchen but because there was just this feeling about her. It was like she was more mature than everyone around her but had a sweet and fun mentality that made you want to be around her all the time. Still professionally of course.  A few months later Kendall joined my sales team when she graduated. She ended up sitting next to me for coaching purposes, but I’m not sure who was more distracting to the other. Just like in Denver, Kendall laughed at everything I said, even things that were for sure not funny. She was a lot of fun to have on the team because aside from being the personality of the team, she just made it easy on me. Every morning I would beat Kendall to the office and despite her being 45 minutes earlier than the rest of the team I would sarcastically yell out “Nice of you to join us today Ms. Huber!” – which she still laughed at repeatedly for 8 months straight. Then I would usually grill her about the dates she went on, always ending the same way: ‘he was nice but I was bored so I left early’. She was going on so many dates that I used to joke that she was in a hurry to change her last name (which is the same story when I asked her to marry me 5 years later).  When I told my team I was leaving, Kendall cried, like hard. I was like, are you okay? And to be honest I don’t even remember what she said because to this day I still freeze up a little bit when she cries (usually now during tv shows and movies where she responds ‘Its just so nice’). On my last day we all went out and got drinks together. We bounced from bar to bar with our friends until we landed at the usual: Basement Bar. I would love to tell you that our first kiss was romantic like you saw in movies stories, but this was a little more our style. We somehow found our way to each other in the middle of the dance floor, almost certainly dancing to some 2000s top 40 song, and we started making out in front of all of our coworkers and friends.

The Proposal

July 3rd 2023

We woke early up in Praiano, Italy (a town off the Amalfi Coast) and grabbed an amazing breakfast before we headed out for the day of the trip that I had been most looking forward to. I had planned for us to go on an 8-hour boat ride along the coast. When people asked what we were most excited for on the trip, I mentioned this day without hesitation. We stood outside waiting for the bus that should I have taken us to the pick up point that I thought was 45 minutes away when I realized that we were more than 2 hours away by car... My heart dropped into my stomach and I started to panic. I told Aaron the problem and he quickly said, "No worries hun. Lets spend the day in the town." Typically, Aaron would jump into problem solving mode & we would have made this damn boat tour! Little did I know that that this worked out perfectly for him. Aaron had planned to propose later that night and hired a photographer before he knew that the boat tour was 8 hours long. When he figured this out, he pushed me to move our dinner reservation to a later time and crossed his fingers we would make it back in time to shower and make the reservation. I went inside to see if there was anything the hotel could do. These excursions were booked months in advance so lucky for Aaron there was nothing they could do! We spent the rest of the day at the beach on Positano and exploring the town together. As Aaron had told me countless times, it ended up being a perfect day. *side note: I started a game with Aaron, "are they on their honeymoon or does she think they're getting engaged?" as we saw many girls dressed in all white during the time we spent in Amalfi* We headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for our dinner reservation and grabbed a coffee on the way up. Aaron told me he was going to get some cash and he would meet me up stairs. He insisted I take my time getting ready, something I love to do. As I curled my hair and sipped my coffee I mentioned to Aaron that the coffee was strong. He agreed and became increasingly more chatty. This wasn't out of the ordinary for Aaron as he is more sensitive to caffeine than I am. As I put on my lip gloss, Aaron insisted again that I take my time. I began to think to myself, I am almost ready?! How can he not tell?! He showered up and went out a little early to grab a drink ahead of our reservation. We walked all around Praiano looking for a good spot, and Aaron seemed to be more particular than usual on where he wanted to stop. After a long walk, we found a cute bar that over-looked the water. As we sat there, Aaron tried to tell me something and began to stutter and could not recover. I have never heard him stutter in my life. I had two thoughts: 1. That coffee really was strong 2. What's going on... We finished our drinks and made our way down to the dinner reservation when Aaron asked if he could film the sunset. He had been filming all weekend so I really thought nothing of it and said sure. As we walked along the path I did notice a photographer but again, thought nothing of it! It's Italy! He took my hand, told me he loved me got down on one knee. The first words out of my mouth were "It's me?!" (note: the game mentioned above, I'm the girl getting engaged?!) and shortly after, "yes, yes, yes, yes!!!"

For all the days along the way
