What Do I Wear & Other FAQs

Question

What is the Sangeet?

Answer

A sangeet is a pre-wedding event in Indian weddings. It is a lively celebration that usually takes place a day before the wedding to welcome everyone together for singing and dancing and to create a social bond between the two families. Traditional colorful outfits are worn to symbolize the joyous and celebratory nature of the event, reflecting happiness, vibrancy, and excitement for the upcoming wedding. Select family and friends have prepared choreographed dances to celebrate the couple, but other guests are encouraged to dance the night away!

Question

What is the Dress Code for the Sangeet?

Answer

For the sangeet, we encourage guests to dress in traditional Indian attire as is traditional for this event. For women, this means lehengas, shararas, or Anarkalis. For men this means bandhgala/jodhpuri, achkan, or nehru jacket. You can find these items online at: House of Indya Kalki Fashion Lashkaraa Andaaz Fashion Aza Fashions Pratap Sons Haykay Chazaar Trendia All Borrow (RENTAL) Saris and Things (RENTAL) Glomour Rental (RENTAL) If you are in the Northern Virginia area and would like to buy in person, please contact Neena Handa at 703-582-4790. For NJ/NY shoppers, we advise searching the Edison Indian Market - use Manyavar or Nazraana as your starting location. We also want our guests to tear up the dance floor, so bring a change of shoes if needed! If you would prefer to dress in Western-wear, the dress code is formal (ankle-length dresses, dressy separates, as well as fitted, suits paired with a crisp white button-down and tie). No white please!

Question

What is the Baraat?

Answer

At the baraat, the groom arrives on a horse at the wedding venue with a procession accompanied by family and friends to symbolize his journey to the wedding alter. Please arrive at the golf house entrance at 3:30 sharp for baraat. The bride's family will greet the baraat at a designated location near the ceremony site, where the Milni will take place, followed by the ceremony.
