In the fall of 2013, Ken moved to Boston to study computer engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology while Joy moved from South Korea to pursue a doctorate degree in pharmacy at MCPHS University. We met during the first year of college at the drama club for students from affiliated schools in Fenway area. We were put in the same play where we played a couple in a relationship where the girl is breaking the guy’s heart for another guy. Despite the end of a relationship in the play, we started to hit it off practicing lines together and hanging out with friends together. Soon after the shows, our feeling for each other grew bigger than friendship and decided to go on our first date to see Hunger Games 2 on November 24, 2013.
We both love adventures. We like exploring Boston’s rich history and cultural diversity. Our favorite thing to do together is just walk around the city and see what comes up. With a college student budget, we enjoyed cooking different things for each other in a small dorm kitchen. For traveling, we made a short trip to Mexico on spring break and did a road trip to ten national parks in Utah, Arizona and Colorado together. We continue to expand our bucket list and checking off places we want to go one by one together.
When Ken graduated with his bachelor’s degree and decided to start a full-time job at the Navy base in Ridgecrest, CA, Joy still had another two years left in her program. To make the long distance more endurable, Ken made as many trips to Boston to see Joy whenever possible.
Ken proposed to Joy at their favorite spot in the Boston Public Gardens. The Public Gardens has always one of our favorite places to go in Boston and it is especially beautiful in the spring with all the new flowers planted.
We decided we didn’t want to go through the long visa process separation. We decided to stay together, get married at the City Hall in Boston, and start the green card process for Joy. Since we could only invite Ken’s parents and Joy’s two good friends from college to our small wedding, we decided to have another wedding ceremony and reception to celebrate with family and friend.
