Justin remembers first meeting Kelsy in the UCSB Geology department, wearing pajamas, studying for a Biology test. Kelsy remembers first meeting Justin in the Isla Vista Market, barefoot & drinking straight from a carton of chocolate milk. Who knows which encounter was our first, but regardless we each felt a connection to one another that was different and special. For the remainder of our time at UCSB, we spent a lot of time together surfing, cooking, exploring, and of course, enjoying the UCSB drinking culture ;) Our love has been tested by time and distance. We were in different states for graduate school and even though we took some time off from dating to focus on academics, we found our way back to one another once we graduated. We have been together for a third of our lives, and though relationships are never easy, it has always been worth it to put in the work to have a loving and strong partnership.
We love the outdoors so it's only fitting that we got engaged in the Eastern Sierras among some huge mountains and beautiful alpine lakes. Justin had gotten permits for a bucket list backpacking trip to Italy Pass and Granite Park, just an hour South of Mammoth Lakes where we currently live. Kelsy had a feeling something was up but didn't say anything on the first day of the trip. The second morning Justin suggested that they walk up to a beautiful view of the basin below while they had breakfast. After we finished our muffins and coffee, Justin stood up and his posture and demeanor changed. After some laughable moments and awkward movements, Justin got down on one knee and proposed. Kelsy immediately started crying (and laughing) and said yes. The moment perfectly captured us, even with so much love and sincerity for what we have built over the last 12 years, we can always make each other laugh!
