If you ask Kelsey: So I’ll tell my side of it since I was completely not expecting it. Which I feel like is how most people prefer it, as a surprise. At the time this happened we had been dating for about a year and a half I believe. We had been living in a small rental house until we were ready to get a house. At this point, it was him and I, and only two dogs. Our other fur babies came along down the road. So the day Robert proposed was like any other day, go to work, come home, and cook dinner together. After we finished eating and while cleaning up in the kitchen Robert stopped me in my tracks and starts telling me how much he loves me and how much I meant to him. He says he’s so happy our paths crossed. He explains how even with ups and downs, stresses and joys, that I ground him and he couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. At first, my thought was "oh ok how cute, I love you too", now back to the dishes, which he must have read from whatever facial expression I was giving. So then he continued on, almost repeating the same thing he just said to me again. He must have known I was not catching on because at this point I was completely thrown off guard with the conversation. I mean we say “I love you” all the time but usually excluding the mushy gushy love confessions. I’m so confused that I cut him off completely and ask “Are you breaking up with me?”… a legitimate question on my end. It turned into what seemed like the longest moment of silence, now both confused, and then he laughs and said no. He finally pulls out a little black box from his back pocket as quickly as possible to clear the confusion. At first, we both start laughing and then I get embarrassed because I couldn't catch a hint. Him pulling out a ring and proposing was honestly the last thing I expected him to do. He tells me how it took him days to think of the words to say and felt terrible that it somehow came out as a breakup speech. To make matters worse he told me that he planned to ask when we went out to dinner earlier that week however, on that particular evening I was exhausted and had a terrible day, so I was very grumpy and Robert thought… well, maybe now isn’t the time. In the end, it was perfect and a great story that we will always look back on and laugh.
