Paul and Kelsey met New Years Eve of 2008. Michelle and Mike Jorissen are partying the night away across the lake, when Michelle spots a handsome group of young college boys looking forlorn. She informs them of a magical cabin across the lake, filled with drunk college girls just waiting to have fun. With the urging of Oma, Paul's grandmother, the boys set out to find beer and then seek this magical cabin. Cut to: Kelsey and her college friends in their pajamas. No makeup on. Not evening drinking yet. The phone rings. Michelle is on the other line, informing the girls that a group of strange young men are headed their way. Kelsey hangs up on her mother mid-sentence in fury. Oma tells Michelle that Kelsey won't be angry once she lays eyes on the boys. (P.S. Oma was right). The boys arrive. They party the night away. Kelsey and Paul become friends. Five years of Taylor Swift songs sent via mixed CD, cabin weekends together, and Michelle asking Kelsey why she won't date Paul ensue. Then in 2013, Mike invites Paul to climb Mt. Whitney with some of Mike's family and Paul agrees to go. Kelsey suffers some serious altitude sickness but makes it to the top with the help of Paul making sure she doesn't fall off the side of the mountain. At the summit of Mt. Whitney, despite her nausea and dizziness, Kelsey realizes she has fallen hard for Paul. In a stroke of good fortune, Paul's new job is just a quick 90-minute drive from Kelsey in Chicago. He agrees to come visit her in Chicago at the end of October. After a much-needed dinner at Hamburger Mary's, Kelsey and Paul grab a bottle of Tennesse Honey Whiskey to share back at her apartment. The rest is history.
