How We Met

It all started in Santoro

Faris and I met a few weeks into our freshman year at Christopher Newport University. We were both assigned to live in Santoro with friends from high school. My room was on the hall we called Three East and Faris was on Two North. One night, my roommate Beka decided to visit a friend on Two North and I went with her. It must've been fate that our friend Dom was hanging out with some guys across the hall . . . where Faris was hanging out too. After some brief introductions, I knew that these were the people I wanted to spend my time with at CNU. Beka and I slowly started spending more time on Two North with our new group of friends. In the beginning, Faris was the kind, funny guy in striped shirts who would show up at our door with a whiteboard to plan the events of the evening. Pretty soon I was able to recognize the sound of Faris' shoes coming down the hall and I couldn't help but get excited. I didn't think I had any chance with him until one weekend our plans led to a "super exclusive" trip to our friend's bay house. Only a few people from Two North were invited . . . and Beka and me of course. At the bay house, Faris and I had our first "heart to heart" and I realized I liked this guy a lot. After the bay house, we started hanging out all the time and we became each other's best friend. One night we discovered that whoever lived in the dorm room before Faris painted constellations on the ceiling above his bed with glow in the dark paint. "Stargazing" became our new thing and it gave me an excuse to hang out with him more. After a few months, we couldn't help but realize that we were the only ones in our friend group staying up until 2 and 4 a.m. to "stargaze" and talk every night. Being away from Faris over winter break made me realize I wanted to keep him in my life for good, so when we came back to campus in January we started dating. Now here we are thousands of late nights, outdoor adventures, and video gaming sessions later, marrying our best friend.

The Proposal

November 4, 2018

Almost every year, I've planned a scavenger hunt for Kelsey's birthday. At the end of every clue, there's a small gift that would eventually lead up to a big surprise! Since her family was on vacation during Kelsey's birthday in 2018, we couldn't do the annual scavenger hunt. I used this as an opportunity to propose to her and have some fun at the same time! In November, I convinced Kelsey that we should have a delayed birthday scavenger hunt since I already had the clues ready to go. The clues for this hunt took us all around Kelsey's neighborhood and included throwing darts, finishing a puzzle, waking up her dog Jett from his morning nap, and driving to York River State Park. After giving her a few smaller gifts along the way, we made our way down to the gazebo overlooking the York River. I had her close her eyes for the last surprise and count to 30. I got down on one knee and asked her to spend the rest of her life with me!
